The coffin that no one could lift
She was only 25 years old, and since joining the family, she had treated her in-laws like her own parents. Her mother-in-law, Doña Helena, considered her a blessing. But the joy only lasted a little more than a year.
An unexpected tragedy
That night, Elena was seized with severe abdominal pain. She was crying, holding her belly. Rushed to the hospital, it was already too late. The baby didn’t have time to cry out and she never woke up. His death plunged the family into deep sadness. Don Luis, her husband, stood motionless, staring at Elena’s portrait on the coffin, where she smiled tenderly.

When the time came to carry the coffin, eight young men tried to lift it… without success. Despite all their efforts, the coffin did not move: it seemed literally glued to the ground. An old man then whispered:
“She must still be full of sadness.” She can’t leave.
Then a shaman present spoke in a calm voice:
“Open the coffin.” She still has something to say.
Tears after death
When the bell was removed, everyone was paralyzed. Two more tears were streaming down Elena’s face. Her eyelids were half-open and her eyelashes remained moist—as if she had just cried. Doña Helena fell to her knees, grasped her daughter-in-law’s hand and begged:
“Elena… cry no more… If you want to tell us something, tell me, my daughter…
A profound silence then enveloped the court.
The heartbreaking confession
Then, suddenly, a sob broke the silence. Luis, the husband, knelt down, his head hidden in his hands, weeping without restraint. Doña Helena asked him if he had heard anything. Luis raised his eyes, red with tears, and confessed:
“It’s my fault…” She left with a broken heart…
He explained that Elena had found out that he was unfaithful to her. She had said nothing; she had just hugged her belly and cried all night. He had promised her that he would end this relationship, but it was too late. It was that same night that she suffered a terrible illness which led to her death.
“I’m sorry… I was a coward… forgive me, Elena…
The last sign
The sobs became more numerous. In the rain, Doña Helena was crying:
“My God… Why have you suffered so much, my daughter? Forgive me for not protecting you…
Luis rested his forehead on the coffin, imploring:
“You can hate me, you can be angry… But please let me finally take you to rest…
Then the coffin trembled slightly. The shaman nodded.
“Now she lets go.
The men then managed to lift him easily. The funeral trumpets sounded again. They all bowed their heads, silently accompanying the one who was leaving with a bruised heart.
Luis remained on his knees in the rain. In his soul, every apology resounded without comfort. He knew that no crying, no complaint could make up for his mistake. And that every night without peace, the image of Elena in tears would haunt him as an eternal reminder of his guilt.
What does this story teach us?
It teaches us that emotional wounds can be as deadly as physical wounds. Sometimes the silence of those who suffer is deeper than the loudest of cries, and when we don’t listen to it, we risk losing forever those who loved us most. Unspoken words, broken promises, and lack of empathy leave scars that neither time nor forgiveness can erase.
Taking care of those around us, respecting their feelings, and acting responsibly can change the course of many lives. Because there are wounds… that never heal
