The girl said: “My real mother is at the bottom of the well.” Everyone thought that was just an innocent child’s words. But it would be twenty years before the truth was finally revealed when the well was dug.

“My real mother is in the well” – the words of a four-year-old girl that year stirred up a whole barangay in the impoverished countryside of Pampanga. The adults burst out laughing, thinking that the children were imaginative. No one noticed, except for the girl’s grandmother, who had a dark face and was quickly dragged into the house.

The story begins in the summer of 1999. The village’s well is located right in the heart of the neighborhood, both for drinking water and for people to gather and chat. That day, little Maria – a child who lost her mother at the age of two – was playing with her friends. Suddenly, as she looked down at the well, Mary exclaimed:
– “Mother is down there!”

The children laughed, stunned. Some neighbors shook their heads:
– “That’s just a kid, he just misses his mom.”

Since his wife’s disappearance, Mr. Rogelio — Maria’s father — has told the entire village that his wife, Mrs. Luz, has run away with another man. People were worried but then stopped. Still, many people whispered: Luz was gentle, loved her children, and didn’t look like someone who had abandoned them. But in the absence of evidence, all the rumors gradually fell silent.

Over the years, the saying “mother at the well” has become a legend in the village whenever Mary is mentioned. As Maria grew older, she spoke less, often silently staring at the well with deep, sad eyes. Mr. Rogelio strictly forbade anyone to mention his mother in front of his children. Whenever he gets drunk, he curses Luz as a “traitorous woman.”

The secret came out of the old well

Time has covered all the dust. In the early 2020s, when the village had a policy of concrete roads and filling in old wells, the village well was on the list.

While digging the ground, the workers discovered a strange smell. At first, they thought it was an animal carcass, but when they smeared with black mud, a white bone was revealed.

The atmosphere quickly became tense. The barangay police immediately called the investigation team from San Fernando. When the entire well was dug up, the crowd was stunned: beneath the thick layer of mud that slowly revealed…, a female skeleton.

In particular, on her wrist was a silver bracelet with the letter “L” engraved on it, which the village elders immediately recognized – it was the bracelet that Mrs. Luz had used.

The news spread quickly, shaking the whole area. The old rumors returned, but this time no one dared to consider it a trivial matter.

The Daughter’s Illness

Maria – now in her twenties – was stunned to see the silver bracelet. She trembled and took hold of it, bursting into tears:
– “This is mother’s… “I remember…”
Mr. Rogelio had a pale face. All eyes were on him. That year, he himself confirmed that his wife had left him, and he himself was banning any rumors. Now, with her husband’s remains lying right under the village’s well, the only question left is: Who killed Luz?

Police are investigating. Preliminary tests show Luz died at the same time as her disappearance in 1995. There was no sign of falling into the well – as the skull had suffered a severe fracture, as if it had been hit by a hard object.

The rumors turned into accusations:

– “Rogelio might have killed himself!”

– “Who else has the courage to hide something like this?”

Mr. Rogelio vehemently denies this, saying that Luz left and accidentally fell into the well. But the more he defends himself, the more he loses himself amid suspicious eyes.

In one of her testimonies, Maria broke down in tears, saying that since she was a child, she often dreamed of her mother wearing a blue floral shirt, calling her name from underwater. At the age of four, as she looked out over the well, she heard a whisper “Son, I’m here” — which caused her to utter deadly words.

The horrific story stirred up the entire Pampanga region. People began to search for their memories: on the night Luz went missing, who heard what, who saw what?

An elderly neighbor confirmed: that night, from Rogelio’s house came the sound of a fierce argument, then silence. But he was afraid, not daring to speak.

Gradually the truth emerged, as if the skeleton had dragged the whole village back to face the buried past. Mary knelt on her mother’s lips, whispered through her tears:
— “Mother, at last, you have come back to me…”

Rogelio didn’t move, his eyes empty as if he had lost his soul.

The case was reopened after more than twenty years. But even though justice was too late, for Maria, the innocent words of the past few years were finally vindicated — and the truth came out of the cold well of the Philippine countryside.

Immediately after the remains were recovered from the barangay well in Pampanga, the barangay police contacted the PNP – Philippine National Police to open the official investigation file. The case was classified as a “cold case” – a case that had been pending for more than 20 years, but now there is new evidence.

The remains were transferred to the forensic department in San Fernando. The forensic report confirmed:

The deceased was a woman, between the ages of 25 and 30, the same as Ms. Luz at the time of her disappearance.

Cause of death: traumatic brain injury caused by a hard object, before the body is thrown into a well.

There are also marks of swelling on the neck bone.

The whole village was shaken. So, Ms. Luz must have been killed.

Testimony of neighbors

Police have examined the survivors’ memories after more than two decades. An elderly woman named Aling Pilar shuddered as she said:

“That night, I heard a fight coming from Rogelio’s house. There was the sound of smashing things, then a loud scream from Luz. But then everything went quiet. I wanted to go check, pero natakot ako na lasing siya, kaya tumahimik ako.”

Another man, who was a night watchman at the time, testified:

“I saw Rogelio walking down the road to the well in the middle of the night. He was pulling a big sack, his back wet. I thought he was carrying rubbish or something, but I wasn’t expecting it…”

As a result of these statements, the atmosphere in the barangay hall became tense and tense.

While investigating Rogelio’s old house, police discovered an old, locked wooden chest. Inside were the women’s clothes stained with dried blood and a heavy wooden stick.

When the blood sample was analyzed, it matched the skeleton’s DNA in the well.

Mary was stunned when she saw these things. Her hands trembled, because the blue floral shirt on her chest was the image she had seen so often in her childhood dreams.

On the other hand, Rogelio has vehemently denied this. He shouted at the police station:
– “I didn’t kill! He left me, he left! It’s not my fault!”

But his trembling voice and confused eyes made the crowd even more suspicious.

An old policeman sighed:
—”You have no way of denying it. The whole village heard the argument. Physical evidence is also in your home.”

Mary knelt before the makeshift altar that had been built for her mother, sobbing:
—”Mother, I have waited twenty years to find you. It turns out that all the truth is in the house where I grew up…”

Maria’s grandmother – Rogelio’s mother – burst into tears, covered her face and cried out:
– “My son… Why did you do this? You killed your wife, you left my grandson to a lie!”

The investigation file gradually closed with evidence piling up against Rogelio. But he remained stubborn, refusing to admit the whole truth that night in 1995.

In Mary’s heart, the pain did not go away. He understood that the truth depended not only on his mother’s death, but also on the cause – what had caused his father to become so cold-blooded?

The whole village of Pampanga was still in a state of chaos, as if the remains in the well had not only caused crime, but had revived the dark secrets that had been buried for twenty years.
