I’ve been married for two years. My husband’s family has three brothers, my husband is the youngest child, and his sister – Ms. Hanh – is popular with them as a sour person who likes to show off. Ever since I came home as a bride, she has always shown a seductive attitude, never bothering to hide it.
My family was in a poor countryside, my parents were farmers, and I was an independent girl from an early age. After graduating, I worked hard in the furniture field, and gradually built my own company. But because of my simplicity, I didn’t brag, even my husband’s family didn’t know I was a director. In their eyes, I was “a provincial woman who was lucky enough to marry a rich husband”.
Ms. Hanh often hints:
– “I don’t know what blessing her family would be to marry my sister. Women now know that they are good cooks, but money is probably worthless.”
I listened, just smiled. I didn’t have to prove anything. But life is ironic – and the day you have to accept “revenge” came sooner than I thought.
One weekday morning, the whole family was busy because they thought Ms. Hanh was getting married. Her husband – that is, the bride – was someone who worked in the field of construction design, and everywhere she sounded “bloody”. My mother-in-law was very happy, and kept telling me:
– “Get some nice clothes ready, tomorrow I’m going to the kid’s house with the whole family to debut.”
I nodded, but before I could say anything, Ms. Hanh came out, her arms crossed, and said in a sarcastic voice:
“Come on, I’m not going. Her house is full of people with conditions, I’m from this background, I’m scared to go with you.”
I was stunned. My wife said,
“What are you talking about, my husband is also a member of the family!”
But Mrs. Hanh still said casually: – “I don’t understand.
You have to look at your face everywhere! People know that my youngest daughter-in-law is a resident of the province, and if she wears cheap clothes, what kind of system does she have?”
I was silent. Not out of embarrassment, but because I didn’t want to be married. I just smiled and said softly:
– “I want you to be happy. You can’t go.”
But I know that fate sometimes has an arrangement that makes even the most arrogant person bow.
Three months ago, my company had just signed a contract with a construction company for an interior project for a high-end hotel. My direct partner was Mr. Quang, the head of the technical department – who worked seriously and humbly, and I loved him for his professionalism. We had met a few times, just for work.
I didn’t realize that guy was the groom at my mother-in-law’s wedding.
On the wedding day, even though Ms. Hanh forbade it, I went anyway. I don’t want to boast, I just want to be a blessing from my heart. I was wearing an elegant, simple but classy white dress. As she entered the banquet hall, Mrs. Hanh saw me and immediately scowled:
– “What are you here for? I told you, there is no need.”
I smiled:
“I’m just here to greet you, it’s okay.”
He said,
“It depends, but don’t think my house is inviting.”
I remained silent.
A few minutes later the groom arrived, dressed in a neat dress. When he looked at me, he was shocked as if he had seen a ghost. The entire glass of wine in his hand fell to the floor, shattered.
His voice trembled:
– “Giam… Director Xiang?”
The space was silent. Whispers spread throughout the banquet table.
Ms. Hanh’s eyes widened:
“You… What are you talking about?”
Quang turned pale, bowed his head:
– “He… He was my direct boss at the company, the one who signed the contract and approved the hotel project with me.”
My mother-in-law opened her mouth, and Ms. Hanh stood like a statue.
I smiled slightly, in a calm voice:
– “Hello, Mr. Quang. I didn’t expect us to meet in this situation right now.”
He bowed his head deeply:
“I… Oh no, director… I was really surprised. Sorry, today is the day… I guess I have to thank you a lot.”
I replied calmly,
“There’s no need for a flute. Have a nice day, just relax. I just came here to say hello.”
That sentence silenced the entire auditorium. Some of the guests on the boy’s side looked at me with different eyes – both polite and curious.
Sister Hanh, her face was white at this time, and she tried to smile doubtfully:
— “Oh… My uncle seems to be the size… “Is your husband really the boss?”
I looked at him and said in a low voice:
“Yes. At the company, I wasn’t used to showing my personal stories. But I think people are rich or poor not in their hometown, but in the way they live and work.”
Suddenly, the wind slowed down. My mother-in-law turned to Ms. Hanh and sighed slightly:
“Hanh, how can you live so that people respect your youngest daughter-in-law more than you do?”
I just smiled, I didn’t say anything. I don’t need to embarrass anyone—the truth is enough to make people feel ashamed of themselves.
After the wedding, the attitude of the entire family changed. Ms. Hanh didn’t say anything, she even texted to apologize. I’m not angry – I’m sad. People only look down on you when they don’t understand who you are.
My wife took my hand and said softly:
— “I’m proud of you. I taught him a lesson without harsh words.”
I laughed:
“No one is poor forever, no one is rich forever. What matters is how I treat others when I’m at the top.”
I looked up at the afternoon sky, feeling relieved. Life is fair – the person who was despised yesterday can bow down to the person they once despised.
And when the groom bowed and called me two words “Director”, I didn’t feel proud. I just see that, at the end of the day, true respect doesn’t come from money, but from the personality and effort we put in.
