My husband went on a business trip, but when I visited my in-laws, I was shocked to see baby diapers hanging all over the yard
My husband told me that he was going on a business trip to Da Nang for a whole week. He advised me to stay at home, to rest, that it was not necessary to visit his parents in the country. But that day, for some reason, my intuition was telling me otherwise, so I decided to take the bus and surprise my in-laws.
As soon as I crossed the fence, the first thing I saw was not the kind smile of my mother-in-law, nor the thin figure of my father-in-law sweeping the yard. What paralyzed me was seeing a whole row of baby diapers hanging on clotheslines and cables in the garden. Some had yellow stains, others traces of milk.
I stood paralyzed. My in-laws were already in their sixties. It was impossible for them to have a baby. Nor was there any family member who had left them a child. So… whose diapers were they?
I went in trembling. The house was unusually quiet, but there was a faint smell of formula. On the table, a half-finished bottle. My heart was pounding, my mind was in chaos.
Was my husband hiding something from me?

Just then, a baby cry came from the old room my husband and I used to use every time we came home. I ran over there, my hands shaking as I struggled to pick the lock. When I open the door… On the bed was a newborn, moving his little arms and legs, while my mother-in-law hurriedly changed his clothes.
When she saw me, she turned pale, as if all the blood had gone from her body. I stammered:
– Mom… whose baby is this?
She trembled, avoided looking me in the eye, and barely managed to whisper:
“Don’t hate us… This baby carries the blood of this family.
My whole body froze. My husband’s words, his strange business trips, my mother-in-law’s evasions… Everything was spinning like a whirlwind in my head.
Could it be that… did my husband have a child out of wedlock?
I fell into a chair, unable to take my eyes off the baby. She looked so much like him: the forehead, the eyes… it was undeniable. I felt a lump in my throat, as my mother-in-law held the baby with trembling hands.
– Mom… what’s going on? I demanded.
His eyes filled with tears as he whispered:
– This child… is by Hùng. We weren’t going to hide it from you forever, but her father said, “wait for the right time.” No one imagined that you would come so suddenly…
My world fell apart. Those trips, those excuses… It was all a façade to cover up this terrible truth.
“And the baby’s mother?” I managed to ask in a broken voice.
My mother-in-law looked down:
– She left the baby and disappeared… Poor little Hùng has been fighting alone, so…
He didn’t even finish speaking when the gate creaked as it opened. Familiar footsteps were heard. I turned—my husband came in dragging his suitcase, and he was surprised to see me there.
“You… what are you doing here? He stammered, and his expression changed when he saw the baby in his mother’s arms.
I stood up suddenly, my eyes lit up:
“Your so-called “business trip to Da Nang”… was it just a lie to hide that you were here taking care of your illegitimate child?
The air became unbreathable. My mother-in-law squeezed the baby, my father-in-law froze at the door, and my husband began to break out in a cold sweat.
I advanced, almost shouting:
“Say it!” This kid is yours, right?!
He was silent for a long moment, until he finally nodded his head.
My heart was shattered. All my love, my trust, my sacrifices… turned to dust.
I let out a bitter, sarcastic laugh:
— So all these years, I was just a puppet, while you led a double life: husband with me, father of another woman’s child.
He ran to me, took my hand, pleading:
– Please listen to me, it’s not what you think… I was going to tell you, but—
I let go of his hand with fury in my eyes:
“Isn’t that what I think!?” Then what? Did the baby fall from the sky?
The house was left in a sepulchral silence. My mother-in-law wanted to speak, but I raised my hand to stop her. He wanted to hear the truth from his own mouth.
“How long did you plan to hide this from me?” Until the boy called me “aunt”? Or until I couldn’t have children, and you used this as an excuse to abandon me?
He lowered his head silently. That silence was the cruelest confession of all.
I took a deep breath and stood firm, in a determined voice:
— Very good. You have a son, and I have my dignity. Get rid of me. I refuse to be the pathetic woman that everyone looks at with pity.
He panicked:
“No! I was wrong, but think about our family, my parents…
I looked at him coldly:
“The one who never thought of this family was you.
And with that, I turned around and walked out, leaving behind the baby’s crying, my husband’s desperate pleas, and my mother-in-law’s sobs.
But I didn’t stop. Only one thought burned in my mind:
I’m going to start over—but never with him.
