In a small alley in Barangay San Isidro, Quezon City, everyone knows Lolo Ben – a skinny, hunched-backed old man in his seventies who works hard every day to take care of Ana, his ten-year-old orphaned granddaughter. Ana’s father works far away as an OFW, and her mother died before she could remember his face. Her grandfather is her only support.
The whole neighborhood sympathizes with the two of them depending on each other. Every morning, Lolo takes Ana’s hand to the alley entrance to catch a jeepney to school, and in the afternoon, she cooks rice and helps her with her homework. Everyone can feel his love for Ana.
One hot afternoon in early autumn, Aling Lani – a neighbor next door who sells goods at the sari-sari store at the alley entrance – came over to visit. Lolo Ben’s door was half-closed. She was about to call out when she heard him whispering, urgently:
“Ana, don’t sleep… wake up, don’t scare Lolo…”
Through the crack in the door, she saw him holding his grandchild tightly in his arms, shaking and calling continuously, while Ana lay still, her face pale. Aling Lani was startled, her heart pounding. Scary thoughts flashed through her head: an old man alone at home with his grandchild, now the grandchild was unconscious in his arms… How unusual!
Without time to think much, she shakily dialed 911, reporting “danger signs” at the neighbor’s house; at the same time, calling the barangay tanod for help.
Only ten minutes later, the police and ambulances rushed in. The whole alley was in chaos. Curious people gathered around, whispering:
“Is there something wrong?”
“Naku, it’s creepy…”
The door swung open. Before their eyes, Lolo Ben was holding Ana, her face covered in sweat, her eyes red. Seeing the doctor and the police, he frantically called out…– “Save my grandchild! He’s been unconscious since this morning, I’ve been shaking him but he won’t wake up!”
The medical staff quickly checked him. A few minutes later, they breathed a sigh of relief:
– “Severe hypoglycemia. We have to transfer him to the hospital immediately!”
The crowd roared. The doubts from earlier turned into embarrassment. People looked at each other, feeling sorry for having thought badly of the old man.
Lolo Ben’s tears rolled down, he ran after the stretcher while trembling:
– “Because I’m poor, I don’t have money to buy nutritious food… This morning he said he was full, I thought he was real, but who would have thought…”
At East Avenue Medical Center, after timely emergency care, Ana gradually regained consciousness. The baby was tired but whispered:
– “Don’t cry… I’m fine… just tired…”
Lolo hugged her grandchild tightly, choking:
– “Lolo was so scared… I thought I had lost you. Lolo was the only one left…”
The doctor explained: Ana had congenital type 1 diabetes, needed a special diet and blood sugar monitoring; otherwise, it was easy to have low blood sugar which was very dangerous. Lolo Ben was speechless after hearing that. Old age, weak health, limited money; now with the grandchild’s illness – difficulty compounded difficulty.
At that moment, Aling Lani walked in, holding his hand:
– “I’m sorry for the misunderstanding… but thanks to that, ambulansya came in time. From now on, you’re not alone. The whole alley will take care of you.”
Lolo looked up, seeing sincerity in her eyes. He nodded slightly. His eyes were still blurred, but his heart warmed.
After that incident, the small neighborhood loved Ana even more. Some contributed rice, others contributed money; the botika owner gave blood sugar test strips; The barangay hall called for support for glucose gel. Ana’s school also arranged separate meals, instructing teachers to recognize signs of hypoglycemia for timely treatment.
The story gradually calmed down, but every time she remembered the initial moment of doubt, Aling Lani still shuddered. She told her neighbors:
– “Sometimes it’s easy to think wrongly about others. But Lolo Ben’s love for his grandson – no one can deny it.”
Since then, the image of the grandfather bending over to lead his grandson to school has become a warm symbol in Barangay San Isidro. And it was the 911 call due to that misunderstanding that saved Ana’s life, at the same time strengthening the bond of the village and neighborly love.
