Chiefs Predicted to Make ‘Unpopular’ Move With Travis Kelce

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce is undecided on his NFL future, but what if the franchise made the decision for him?

After the Kansas City Chiefs lost in the Super Bowl to the Philadelphia Eagles, attention quickly turned to the future of tight end Travis Kelce.

The future Hall of Famer has nothing left to prove in the NFL, plus his relationship with Taylor Swift is in the background. Both are factors in whether or not he continues playing.

As such, the Chiefs have given Kelce a March 14 deadline to decide if he wants to play in 2025, and with the new league year starting soon (March 12), the franchise will be eagerly awaiting his decision.

But ESPN’s Aaron Schatz has thrown up a curveball when it comes to Kelce’s future, and it’s one that is very appealing financially for the franchise – cutting Travis.

“This would be a very unpopular move, but Kelce’s contract is set up as an easy way for the Chiefs to gain cap space for 2025,” Schatz writes. “According to Roster Management System, cutting Kelce would cost the Chiefs only $2.5 million in dead money while saving them over $17 million on the salary cap.

“That’s important with the Chiefs currently having negative effective cap space (i.e. the cap space that they would have after signing at least 51 players and a projected rookie class).”

So the Chiefs would get a decent cap saving by cutting Kelce, but is that how the organization would treat a franchise great? Not likely.

That is unless the move is agreed upon by both parties, and that is also predicated on Kelce hanging up the cleats.

Either way, the Chiefs will only have to wait a couple more weeks to find out which way Kelce will go in 2025, and if he does choose to retire, the franchise may just cut him and save a pretty penny.
