MY HUSBAND LEFT ME FOR MY FRIEND FROM HIGH SCHOOL AFTER I GOT A BREAK — THREE YEARS LATER, WE MET AT A GAS STATION AND I COULDN’T STOP SMILING
I thought Marco was my forever. I built all my dreams with him—a home, a family, and a future full of love. But when I had a miscarriage, all that fell apart. Instead of being my support, Marco became a stranger. Always absent, always cold.
That’s where I held on to my best friend from high school, Liza. She was the one I poured all my pain and fear out on. But behind her seemingly caring advice, she was the reason Marco left me for good. When my husband admitted they were having an affair, it felt like I was stabbed with a thousand daggers. I could do nothing but feel depressed as they walked away together.
Three years passed, and I learned to fight. I didn’t let my sadness stay with me. I found a good job, made new friends, and began to trust myself again. Sometimes, at night, I still thought about the pain, but I was no longer tied to it. The wound had become a scar—a reminder of how strong I was.
Until one day, I passed a gas station. I was filling up my car when I suddenly turned around. At the other pump, there they were—Marco and Liza. And they didn’t look good. They were shouting at each other, barely paying attention to the people watching. I could see the anger on Marco’s face and the desperation in Liza.
I approached, not because I wanted to interfere, but because I wanted to show them that they no longer had power over me. They stopped arguing and looked at me. Silently, their eyes locked on mine. I could feel the tension, as if it was time for an encounter.
“How are you?” I asked, my voice calm but my gaze sharp. I didn’t need to say anything bad—my presence was enough to remind me of who they left behind and who got back up.
“Did you think we were happy?” Liza whined, almost shaking. I could see her heart breaking. I didn’t answer, I just smiled and looked at the two of them. Marco, unable to look straight, seemed ashamed, or maybe even regretful.
Other motorists were also looking, and they were even more embarrassed. While they were arguing, I walked back to the car, my head held high and confident. As I closed the door, I heard their argument again, louder, more violent. And that’s when I realized—I didn’t need to take revenge. The world had already done it for me.
As I started the car, a smile spread across my lips. The smile of victory, the smile of someone who had not only survived, but had found true freedom. The woman they had left crushed, was now a strong warrior.
And through the car mirror, I see them still fighting, while I’m driving away—toward a brighter tomorrow.
A Call From the Past
As I drove the car away from the gas station, the smile on my face couldn’t leave my lips. But when I got home that night, there was a strange silence in my heart—not just joy, but a sense of completion. It was as if a door had finally closed.
A few days after that incident, my cellphone rang. A number I hadn’t seen in a long time: Marco. At first, I wanted to hit reject immediately. But something tugged at my heart, so I pressed answer.
– “Hello…” I greeted softly.
– “Can we talk?” he said, almost in a whisper.
I heard the nervousness and heaviness in his voice. I looked around, taking a deep breath.
– “I don’t know if there’s anything else we need to talk about, Marco. We’re both done.”
He was silent for a moment, before answering:
– “I know. But I just wanted to apologize. I didn’t think things would turn out like this. I thought Liza and I were happy, but… I was wrong.”
The nights of tears came back to my mind, the day of the miscarriage, the moment she chose to walk away with my friend. Instead of pain, now I felt pity.
– “Marco, you don’t have to explain to me. What you did is what made me strong. Without it, I might not have learned to fight for myself.”
I heard her sob on the other line. It was as if she had only truly given up then.
Confronting Liza
A few more weeks passed before I saw Liza again. We met at a café we used to go to in high school. She was the one who texted, saying she wanted to see me.
When I arrived, I could barely recognize her. Thin, pale, and with eyes full of regret.
– “Forgive me,” she began immediately, tears falling first on the table. “I did everything to get Marco, but now that I have him… it’s all for nothing. I’ve realized, I never loved him. The truth is, I was just jealous of you before.”
I listened silently. Before, I might have wanted to hear those words. But now that I hear them, I don’t need them anymore.
– “Liza, I don’t have your forgiveness. But I’ve learned not to hold onto anger. If you want to start your life over, do it. But don’t look to me for salvation.”
She nodded, still crying, as I stood up and walked out.
A New Morning
As I left the café, I felt the sunlight on my face. For the first time, I was not a victim of the past. I was not a woman who was abandoned, nor a woman who was betrayed. I was the woman who had passed—and would never return.
In the car, before I started the engine, I looked in the mirror and smiled. The smile of a woman who has not only risen, but is stronger, more steadfast.
Now, Marco and Liza are just shadows of yesterday. As for me, there is a brighter, more peaceful future—and truly mine.
