Pitying the old lady walking in the hot sun, the kind driver gave her a ride, but 10 minutes later, the most terrible thing happened
On a summer afternoon, the asphalt road in Texas seemed to melt under the blazing sun. Jack – a truck driver transporting goods from Dallas to his hometown – turned on the air conditioner at full blast but still felt hot. On the highway, the traffic gradually thinned out, leaving only the steady sound of the engine and the sound of the wind whistling through the cracks in the door.
Suddenly, far away on the side of the road, Jack saw an old lady in her 70s, with a hunched back, wearing a worn straw hat, carrying a heavy cloth bag. Her steps were slow, as if she was tired.
Jack slowed down and pulled over:
— “Ma’am, it’s so hot, why are you walking alone? Get in the car, I’ll give you a ride to cool off.”
The old lady hesitated a bit then nodded, her eyes shining with gratitude. Jack got out and helped her climb into the cabin. The cool air conditioning made her breathe a sigh of relief.
The car started moving, the old woman said she had just gotten off the bus, and was abandoned nearly 3 miles from home. Not wanting to bother anyone, she intended to walk home. Jack listened and smiled, feeling relieved to have done a good deed.
Less than 10 minutes later, when the car passed a deserted stretch of road, the old woman suddenly frowned, sniffed lightly, and said:
— “Sir, I smell a burning smell… like… burning wire or rubber or something.”
Jack was startled for a moment. His nose was used to the smell of engine oil, but there was indeed a strange smell. He quickly slowed down, pulled the car to the side, opened the door, and got out to check.
As soon as he got out, Jack saw thin smoke coming from the left rear tire well. Leaning closer, he discovered that the tire was blistering abnormally, the rubber was hot – just a few more miles at high speed and it could explode. Not to mention, a nearby electric wire had rubbed against the frame, the shell was scorched, just about to touch the metal and create a spark.
If the old lady hadn’t reminded him, Jack would have definitely continued to run through the small pass ahead – where it was steep and had sharp turns. At that time, if the tire exploded or the short circuit touched the engine oil, the consequences would be unpredictable.
He sighed, his heart still beating fast:
— “Ma’am… luckily you smelled it. Otherwise… I don’t know what would have happened.”
The old lady smiled kindly:
— “I’m old, but my nose is still very sensitive. I can tell right away if I smell something strange.”
Luckily, there was a small garage nearby. Jack called them to bring the tools. While waiting, the old lady took a bottle of mineral water from her bag and gave it to him:
— “Drink it, it’s so hot that it’s easy to lose strength.”
Jack took it, his heart filled with gratitude and respect. He thought he was simply helping the old lady hitchhike, but he didn’t expect that she would be the one who saved his life.
After the car was repaired, Jack returned to the cabin and looked at the old woman sitting quietly. Under the harsh Texas sun, her wrinkled face still shone with an unusual calmness. Jack thought for a moment: “If it weren’t for her, I would have been in an accident by now…”
He dared to ask:
— “Where do you live? Let me take you home.”
The old woman smiled and pointed to a small road that turned off the highway:
— “My house is at the end of that road. But if you’re busy, just let me drop you off nearby.”
Jack shook his head:
— “No. After what you just did for me, I have to at least take you home.”
The small house at the end of the road
The truck turned onto a narrow, bumpy dirt road. Finally, Jack stopped in front of a small, dilapidated wooden house with peeling paint on the walls. On the porch, a few pots of golden daisies were still carefully tended.
A little girl of about 10 years old ran out, shouting:
— “Grandma! You’re back!”
Jack was surprised. The old woman hugged the child, her eyes shining. Then she introduced:
— “This is Emma, my granddaughter. Her parents died in a car accident 5 years ago, leaving only the two of them to depend on each other.”
Jack was speechless. He looked around the poor house, understanding why the old woman had to walk under the hot sun – perhaps just to save a few dollars for a taxi ride.
During the conversation, Jack learned that the old woman’s name was Martha. Every day, she often took the bus to town to do odd jobs: cleaning houses for hire, packing groceries. The money she earned wasn’t much, but it was enough to pay for meals and buy books for Emma.
She said softly:
— “I’m old, I don’t have the strength anymore, but as long as she can go to school, I’ll endure any hardship.”
Jack choked up. He remembered the moment she warned him about the burning smell, saving him from an accident. This little woman not only saved a life, but also fought every day to protect her orphaned grandchild.
That day, Jack returned home with a heavy heart. He had been driving for decades, had met many people, but Martha’s story made him uneasy.
A few weeks later, Jack returned to the old road, visited the small house. He brought some food, some new clothes for Emma, and quietly left an envelope with the money he had saved.
Mrs. Martha was moved, her eyes were wet:
— “Sir, I don’t know what to say other than thank you. But don’t worry, I will use this money for Emma, so she can have a better future.”
Jack gently squeezed her skinny hand:
— “You saved me once, now let me help you and Emma. Sometimes, we are family not because of blood, but because of kindness.
From then on, every time the car passed by that suburb, Jack took the opportunity to stop by to visit. The small wooden house gradually had more laughter, and there were new flower pots on the porch. And in Jack’s heart, Martha and Emma were not only people he had helped, but also proof that kindness always gives birth to miracles.
