Part 2: When the Lights Went Out
The storm rolled in quickly that night, thunder rumbling far beyond the cliffs as rain lashed against the tall windows of the Blake mansion. Evelyn moved through the silent halls with a lantern in hand, the electricity flickering until, at last, it died completely.
Darkness swallowed the house.
She made her way to Nicholas’s room, certain he would need her. She opened the door quietly — and froze.
The wheelchair was empty.
Her heart stuttered. For weeks, she had seen him confined, unmoving, refusing even the smallest effort. Yet now, in the faint glow of the lantern, the chair stood abandoned in the middle of the room.
A voice came from the corner, low and strained but steady:
— “You shouldn’t be here, Evelyn.”
She swung the lantern toward the sound. Nicholas stood — stood — leaning heavily on the carved frame of his bed. His face was pale, sweat glistening on his brow, but his legs trembled with the effort of supporting his own weight.
“I… I don’t understand,” she whispered. “You told me you couldn’t—”
His eyes, dark and conflicted, met hers.
— “I wasn’t supposed to. No one can know. Not the doctors. Not my family. Especially not them.”
Lightning split the sky, illuminating the anguish on his face.
Evelyn’s pulse quickened. The millionaire in the wheelchair — the man everyone thought broken and helpless — was hiding a truth darker than she could have imagined.
And with the storm raging outside, she realized she might be the only one he had trusted with this dangerous secret.
Part 3: Whispers in the Dark
The storm raged through the night, wind howling against the Blake mansion like a beast clawing at its walls. Evelyn steadied the lantern, her knuckles white, her gaze fixed on Nicholas as he leaned, trembling but defiant, against the bedpost.
Her voice shook.
— “Why pretend? Why let the world believe you’re paralyzed?”
Nicholas’s lips curled in a bitter half-smile.
— “Because it’s safer this way.”
He sank slowly back into the chair, his breath ragged from the effort, and in that dim glow, Evelyn saw the man behind the legend — not a cruel recluse, but a soul waging a secret war.
She knelt before him, searching his face.
— “Safer from who?”
The answer came as a whisper, barely audible over the thunder:
— “From my own family.”
Evelyn’s pulse quickened. A thousand fragments of gossip she had heard about the Blakes — the inheritance disputes, the sudden accident that had left Nicholas “paralyzed,” the servants who left without notice — all clicked into place.
He reached for her hand, his touch cold but steady.
— “The crash wasn’t an accident. Someone wanted me gone. If they knew I could still walk, they’d try again. That’s why I stay silent, why I let them think I’m broken. Only then am I invisible to them.”
Her breath caught, fear twisting into something else — something dangerously close to protectiveness. In his eyes she saw pain, yes, but also trust, the kind born only from desperation.
Lightning flared, and for an instant their faces were close, shadows dancing across their skin. Evelyn felt the pull of something undeniable, forbidden — the fragile line between nurse and patient, between duty and desire.
But before the moment could ignite, a sound cut through the storm.
A creak.
A door opening somewhere down the hall.
Nicholas stiffened. His hand tightened around hers.
— “They’re here.”
The mansion, once merely cold and lonely, suddenly felt like a trap — and Evelyn realized she wasn’t just Nicholas’s caretaker anymore. She was now part of his dangerous secret
