ITV will be screening its one-off drama Torvill and Dean tonight (Tuesday, December 25) at 9.15pm. Torvill and Dean follows the skaters from first being paired together to their victory at the 1984 Winter Olympics. But did their professional and platonic relationship turn into something romantic?

Are Torvill and Dean married?

Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean are not married despite being in an ice skating partnership since their teens.

Both of the athletes are married to other people with Torvill tying the knot with sound engineer Phil Christensen in 1990 and the couple having two children together: Kieran and Jessica.

Meanwhile, Dean was previously married to French-Canadian ice dancing champion Isabelle Duchesnay between 1991 and 1993, however, the relationship didn’t last.

He went on to marry second wife and American skater Jill Trenary in 1994 with the couple having to sons Jack Robert and Sam Colin together.

Dean’s agent confirmed that the couple had separated in 2010 but they are still on good terms.

Torvill and Dean remain friends to this day after retiring from skating back in 1998.

Although they’re not married, their partnerships is still strong with the duo now serving as head judges on ITV’s Dancing on Ice, which will see them returning to the panel in early 2019.

Did Torvill and Dean have a romance?

Yes, the pair admitted to having a fling while they were teenagers and living in Nottingham.

During Piers Morgan’s Life Stories back in 2013, the pair admitted that they “dabbled” as teenagers.

They revealed on the programme that they shared a brief kiss on the back of a bus, which proved to be awkward for both of them.

Dean explained on the show: “We may have dabbled slightly, but..”

While Torvill went on to say: “Was I there? Was I there, honestly?

“I think we came back from a coach trip one time. We sat at the back. I think he probably put his arm around me and I fell asleep.”

Her partner clarified things, saying: “It was a dabble. There might have been some kissing. And that’s as far as it goes.”

Although there doesn’t seem to be anything romantic between them, both said that there was a “love” between them.

Dean said: “It’s an unusual relationship that we have. And yet at the same time, of course we love each other. You wouldn’t be able to do all that we do without love.”

They previously denied a romance with Torvill saying to the Daily Mail: “I remember somebody saying to me, ‘If you’re dating your skating partner and the relationship breaks down, you won’t have your skating partner’.

“We put to one side all those other elements that we thought would conflict with what we needed to do. That’s how obsessed it was. It was almost like being in a monastery. It was a religion in its own way.”

Screenwriter William Ivory, who penned the script for Torvill and Dean said: “Jayne and Chris fell in love many years ago.

“They bonded over a shared belief, and a shared need, to refract all of life’s vicissitudes through dance – on ice! But they never became an ‘item’.”

He continued: “That they never took their partnership, their love, beyond the world of ice dance is the other question the film explores – and the answer to that is tied up with the first point I was trying to make: that they are artists.”
