Last night we were woken by loud, piercing barking.
At first, I couldn’t understand what was happening: the room was dark, my heart was racing, and the dog kept barking nonstop, as if trying to warn us about something frightening.
My husband suddenly switched on the light, and we both sat up in bed. The dog was standing in front of the corner of the room, staring fixedly at one spot.
— Seeing ghosts again? — I tried to joke, but my voice was trembling.
But this time it was no laughing matter. The exhaustion, the anger of being woken in the middle of the night, and the strange tension in the room made the moment especially disturbing.
I asked my husband to take the dog to another room so we could sleep, but as soon as he reached for her, she broke free and rushed again to the same corner, growling and barking.
— Well, what do you want? — my husband said irritably, — why won’t you let us sleep?
But then he froze. He looked carefully at the place where our dog was staring.
— Call the police immediately, — he said sharply.
— Why, what’s there? — I asked with a trembling voice and looked in the same direction.

In the corner, almost invisible among the folds of wallpaper and the shadow of the wardrobe, was a tiny black dot — the lens of a camera.
We froze. The camera was so well hidden that without the dog we would never have noticed it.
The police arrived half an hour later. Officers removed the device, connected it to a laptop, and checked the recordings.
They couldn’t identify any faces — someone had erased their tracks in advance, but the police explained that such cameras are usually used either to spy on tenants or to collect blackmail material.
We tried to understand — who would need this? We had no enemies and kept nothing valuable.
A few days later, the investigator called us back. The camera was connected to a network and was transmitting footage to a server located in the basement of the neighboring house.
When the police raided it, they discovered that one of our neighbors — a quiet, inconspicuous middle-aged man — had been collecting such recordings from different tenants for years.
He even hid cameras in apartments where he was invited “for a cup of tea,” abusing people’s trust.
But the most chilling part: among hundreds of files, they found a folder with our name on it. Inside were recordings from the past weeks. Every move we made, our conversations, even the most intimate moments — everything was there.
The neighbor was arrested.
And the dog? She became our true hero. If it hadn’t been for her barking that night, we would have continued living under someone else’s surveillance, completely unaware.
