Upon arriving home, Vanessa headed to her study, the only place where she could be in control of her life

Vanessa watched from the window of the Bellagio restaurant with a mixture of calm and sadness. The sun was setting behind the mountains, dyeing the horizon orange, but she could barely perceive the spectacle. Her attention was fixed on the table across the room, where her husband, Daniel, was enjoying such a familiar and relaxed dinner with Isabelle, a young and charming looking woman.

For years, Vanessa had held out hope that their marriage would bounce back, that the differences between them would disappear over time, but every excuse from Daniel to avoid being with her only pushed her further away from the idea of reconciliation. And now, here he was, laughing and chatting with Isabelle as if nothing had happened. He had been coming to this same restaurant with her, without fail, whenever Vanessa suggested it, but he always found an excuse to refuse her.

“What an irony,” Vanessa thought. “What an amazing coincidence…”

He never thought his life would get to this point. She had been the woman who always gave, who always gave in, always hoping that her husband’s gratitude and love would be enough to save everything. But today, seeing them together, he understood that there was something more important than love: self-dignity.

When the waiter approached his table, Vanessa looked at him calmly and asked for Daniel’s table bill. I wanted to make a gift, a very special one.

“Yes, bring me the bill for that table.” I want to give you a gift.

The waiter looked at her confused, but Vanessa, with a calmness that surprised even herself, explained that she would pay for dinner at the table where her husband was. He didn’t want to cause a scandal, just to make it clear that he was no longer afraid. His mind was already decided.

He pulled out the credit card Isabelle had given him on his last birthday, the same one she’d told him to use to pamper himself. Vanessa smiled. Ironically, he was now using it for something much more meaningful: his future.

Once she paid the bill, Vanessa got up and walked past Daniel and Isabelle’s table. He made no noise, he did not make a dramatic gesture, he just walked past him with a firm step. Daniel didn’t even see her. He was too absorbed in his conversation to notice the figure of his wife, who walked confidently, leaving behind her life of sacrifice.

Outside the restaurant, Vanessa took a deep breath, letting the cool night air envelop her. She no longer felt her heart beating to the rhythm of fear or anguish. He felt peace, a peace he had lost long ago.

Upon arriving home, Vanessa headed to her study, the only place where she could be in control of her life. He took off his shoes, sat down at his desk, and opened his laptop. He created a new folder titled “New Life.” He knew that soon his life would take a radical turn, but this time it would not be because of a betrayal; it would be by his own decision.

He reviewed the documents of the house, a small shelter he had bought with the money from the sale of his grandmother’s apartment. Everything was in order. That house was in his name. Just in case. He remembered the times Isabelle had insisted that everything should go to the business, that she would be the one to make up for it later. But Vanessa never lost sight of the most important thing: her own rights.

Calmly, he checked his bank accounts, making sure everything was as it should be. When Isabelle’s message arrived telling her that she would be late for an important meeting, Vanessa couldn’t help but smile. I knew very well how “important” that meeting was.

He wasted no time. He called his trusted lawyer, Maddy Steward, and made an appointment for the next day. The conversation was brief, but the change in his voice was palpable.

“See you tomorrow at ten o’clock at the café ‘Sw@llow’, Maddy. This is… delicate.

That night, Vanessa walked up to the window of her study, looking out over the illuminated city. I no longer saw the lights as before, full of dreams and promises. Now, I saw the prelude to a change, of great changes.

Vanessa knew that the next day would mark the beginning of something new. Something she had been waiting for a long time without knowing it: her freedom. And this time, it was not only a future without Daniel, but a future where she took the reins of her life. And she would do it for herself, for her dignity and for the peace she had longed for so much.
