“Two thieves broke into the home of a 91-year-old widow, not suspecting that an ingenious trap awaited them”
A ninety-one-year-old widow was alone in her home when she heard two thieves try to break in. Thanks to an ingenious ploy, the old woman managed to thwart his plan and take control over the criminals.
Howard had promised Evelyn that they would live and, fate permitting, die together. But fate decided otherwise. One night, Howard passed away of a heart attack, leaving Evelyn to face life alone.
Howard had a small, thriving antique shop in town and kept some of his most valuable pieces at home. The neighbors, murmuring about his fortune, had already tried on several occasions to rob both his store and his home. From that day on, Evelyn didn’t feel safe. She refused help from her neighbors, even though she knew that the whole neighborhood was aware of her situation as an elderly and lonely woman.
One afternoon, returning from shopping, Evelyn noticed her neighbor Rick, thirty-one, suspiciously peeking over the fence. As she approached, he withdrew and pretended not to have seen her. In the neighborhood, it was said that Rick spent his days drinking, that he had lost his job and sent his son to live with his parents. Evelyn carefully avoided it.
The next day, she saw him at her bedroom window, watching her as she read on the balcony. His cold gaze made her uncomfortable. He closed his book, went into the house, and secured the window door; when he turned around, Rick was gone. Since then, she has felt increasingly oppressed. Every night, he thoroughly checked locks and blinds.
Another night, while making tea, he heard a noise in the garden. Armed with a frying pan, she crept over to the back door: she saw Rick and an accomplice scaling the wooden fence, and her heart skipped a beat.
“What are you doing here?” he exclaimed. I’ll call the police if they don’t leave right away!
The two fled at full speed, scared. Evelyn found empty beer bottles in the bushes.
That night, he couldn’t sleep a wink. What if they returned? What if they wanted to hurt him? He decided it was time to act. The next day, he had his trusted handyman install new locks and security cameras. He spent the day watching the screens, not noticing anything unusual. Reassured, she went to sleep.
Around midnight, a loud noise woke her up suddenly: something had fallen in the yard. With his heart pounding, he ran into the living room and checked the monitor, but realized that the sound of the cameras was muted. He went to the kitchen window, drew the curtain back slightly, and saw two figures prowling in the garden, their faces covered, their intentions clear.
One of them muttered that they were going to enter the house. Evelyn reacted instinctively: she called 112 silently; The emergency center ordered him to stay safe, as a patrol car was on its way. But Evelyn didn’t want to wait.
She stood in the kitchen, holding Howard’s picture in her hand, and spoke in a firm voice, as if she were addressing her husband:
“Oh, Howard, tell me: the antiques you kept in the garage, your grandfather’s gold watch, and your great-great-grandfather’s silver flute, are still there, in the closet.
Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the shadows in front of the garage door brighten and then disappear. He also noticed that one of the criminals was manipulating the interior camera of the garage. It was time.
He grabbed Howard’s old baseball bat, pepper spray and spare keys, and slid quietly into the garage through the back driveway. With one swift motion, he sprayed the two men with pepper spray and then lowered the metal shutter just as they tried to escape. With effort, he closed the lock while one of them tried to lift the gate.
Suddenly, red and blue lights illuminated the garden. The police arrived quickly, helped her secure the gate and locked the two criminals inside. Agent Carter removed their masks: one of the faces was none other than Rick’s.
“I knew,” Evelyn murmured.
“Do you know him, ma’am?” Agent Carter asked.
“Yes,” Evelyn replied. He lives two houses away. I had already seen him prowling around my garden a few days ago.
“Worry no more,” Carter reassured her. We have reinforced the place. Do you live alone?
“Yes. My husband passed away two months ago. My son lives in Arizona: he works a lot and rarely comes to see me.
“I advise you to remain vigilant,” Carter warned. But tonight, he has shown skill and bravery. His trap was perfect.
Evelyn smiled shyly. “I made up the whole history of antiques in the garage. I thought that would attract them there.
“A great idea,” Carter congratulated her. She can be proud of herself.
The next day, Evelyn called her son Mark to tell him everything. Mark suggested she move to Arizona, but Evelyn couldn’t bring herself to leave Howard’s house full of memories. So Mark changed jobs and settled near her, along with his wife and children.
Today, Evelyn and Lily, his daughter-in-law, jointly manage Howard’s antique shop, renamed “Howard & Evelyn’s Treasure House.” This illuminated sign hides a story of bravery, memory and a cunning widow who, alone, knew how to outwit the ill-intentioned.
