Title: The Bitter Secret Behind the Golden Mansion: The Wedding I Didn’t Expect

My name is Arjun Mendoza, 20 years old, 180cm tall, and a second-year student at a well-known university in Manila. My life was normal until I met Doña Karina Roxas – a 60-year-old wealthy woman, former owner of a chain of luxury restaurants in Cebu who is now retired.

Our paths met at a school charity event in BGC. Karina is still beautiful; Her hair was silver but her eyes were sharp and attractive. It was his slow but authoritative gait that caught the eye of a young student like me.

After that, he invited me over for tea at his old mansion in Forbes Park, Makati. We talked for hours. I was deeply impressed by the story of his life: a woman who had everything – power, money, fame – but was lonely, childless, and her ex-husband ended up breaking up in silence.

I don’t know when I fell for him. Not because of the money, but the way he looked at me – the look of someone who had suffered and understood the loss.

She revealed a deep wound—a long scar on her stomach from the stabbing of her ex-husband Raghav. She said she needed me as a “shield” and to have a legal heir (via surrogacy) to finally get rid of her ex-husband and traitorous brother.

But before we could make any plans, Raghav suddenly appeared in the room, gun in hand! “Do you think it’s that easy, Karina?” He laughed. But in an instant, my father, General Arvind Mendoza, arrived with the police. Karina called out to him for help. Raghav was captured, and that’s when my father’s heart began to soften in our marriage.

It was raining heavily when the sun went down. Inside the room, Karina handed me a USB drive. “There’s another folder here, Arjun. A folder named after you.”

“This can’t be,”  I whispered.  “My mother is at our house…”

Karina shook her head as she cried.  “I gave birth to you twenty years ago, Arjun. But I wasn’t the one who raised you.”

He showed a video of the hospital. Karina, wounded and weak, holding a baby—me. And next to her was my father, Arvind, who was much younger at the time.

The Truth:

During the time when Raghav was abusing Karina, my father (who was then an investigator in Raghav’s case) helped him. To save me from the danger of a crazy father, Karina decided to “give me away”. She gave me to Arvind and his wife to raise as their own child. She erased herself from my life for my safety.

“I didn’t know you were my daughter when we first met,”  Karina sobbed.  “I only found out when I saw the birthmark on your shoulder after you moved here. I tried to stop everything, but it was too late… things happened so fast.”

I breathed a sigh of relief at one thing:  “That’s why… that’s why I can’t hold you more than a wife. Something is stopping me.”  A child’s instinct saved us from a big mistake.

Epilogue: The Lesson of Love

Three months later, the marriage was quietly annulled in court for legal reasons. The evidence on the USB was enough to send Raghav to prison for life.

Karina did not take her wealth for herself. She gave away almost all of her billions to foundations for abused women. She built a small school in  Tagaytay  where she lives peacefully.

I returned to university, carrying a truth more valuable than any wealth:

True love isn’t always about possession. Sometimes, the bravest thing you can do is let go of the person you love for their own good.

That lesson is worth more than a billion pesos. And for me, it was all worth it.
