THEY DIDN’T WANT TO SIT NEXT TO ME BECAUSE MY MOM WAS A CR CLEANER
“THEY DIDN’T WANT TO SIT NEXT TO ME BECAUSE MY MOM WAS A CR CLEANER — BUT AT GRADUATION, I JUST HAD ONE LINE THAT MADE EVERYONE CRY.”
I’m Mira, a quiet student who grew up with the smell of soap, sweat, and fatigue.
I didn’t grow up with new clothes or fancy clothes.
But every day, I carry the love of a noble mother –
Nanay Belen, the CR cleaner at the school I attend.
I learned that no matter how hard you try, you can be a good person.
To my classmates, I was described as a “son of a.”
THE BOY WHO WAS ALWAYS ALONE
When I was in 1st grade, I knew what it meant to be different.
The first day of class, I was happy to walk in — there was an old bag, and a store-branded notebook on the corner.
But when they heard who my mom was, it all started.
“He’s the son of a Scotsman!”
“It smells like soap!”
“Don’t sit next to him, there might be dirt!”
They laughed.
From then on,
no one wanted to sit next to me.
No one wanted to be with me, not even in the jeep.
Even on a field trip, I was always alone in my seat.
During recess, I would eat alone in the back of the canteen, watching them laugh.
At one point, I was crying.
But every time I came home, my mother would meet me, sweaty, with a mop and a bucket, and say:
“Son, have you eaten yet? I’ve made some sardines.”
I smiled even though I had tears in my eyes.
“Thank you, Mom.”
I can’t say I’m the one laughing at him.
I know that if it wasn’t for him, I wouldn’t be here.
THE TWELVE YEARS OF MOCKERY
The years passed.
Elementary, high school — it’s still the same.
“Son of a janitrese.”
“It smells like soap.”
“Why are you always alone?”
While they were complaining about the assignment, I was studying under the candlelight while my mom did the laundry and cleaned the floor.
At one point, I heard him breathing heavily.
“Son, don’t worry. Once you’re done, you don’t have to experience it.”
I smiled, and in my heart, I let go of the promise:
“One day, Mom, I will be proud of you in front of everyone.”
GRADUATION DAY
After twelve years of crying, enduring, and dreaming — the day I’ve been waiting for has finally arrived.
Graduation Day.
The gymnasium was filled with parents, teachers, and students.
There were flowers, cameras, and laughter.
At the very end of the chair, I saw my mother—
wearing an old stained blouse, and shoes with almost a strap.
To me, she was the most beautiful woman that day.
My name was called:
“VALEDICTORIAN — MIRA BELEN SANTOS!”
I walked silently across the stage.
I can still hear the whispers:
“He’s the son of a, isn’t he?”
“Wait, he’s still a top student?”
But today — I’m the one with the microphone.
I had the opportunity to speak.
THE LINE THAT MADE EVERYONE CRY
I grabbed the microphone.
The whole gym was silent.
I looked at my mother, crying as she sat at the very end.
“Have a good afternoon everyone.
I would like to thank all the teachers, classmates, and parents.
But most of all, I want to thank a woman who has been tempted by you.”
Silence.
No one moved.
“Yes, she is the kind of person
you see every day who laughs, laughs,
But I want you to know — while you’re mocking him, he’s working for my future.”
I swallowed, my voice trembling.
“If I’m honored right now, it’s because of him.
“When he cleaned the floor, he cleaned up my name.”
Everyone was silent.
And within seconds, the sobs began.
Teachers, students, and parents — all crying.
My classmates laughed at me, bowed their heads, cried.
And my mother smiled as tears welled up in her eyes.
As soon as I got off the stage, I walked up to him, grabbed the medal, and put it around his neck.
“Mom, this is for you.”
He held up the medal, shaking.
“Son, you made them cry.”
I smiled, crying too.
“I’m not, Mom. The truth is that they are crying.”
THE MOTHER WHO HAS THE PUREST HEART
I am now the teacher at that school.
And every time a child is mocked for being poor, I say:
“It’s not embarrassing to be a CR cleaner. What’s
embarrassing is to laugh at someone who works honorably.”
And every time Mom walked into school, still carrying the mop and bucket, all the students greeted her with respect.
“Good morning, Mother Teresa!”
And I, standing on the sidelines, smiling as I looked at him.
“Mom, you didn’t just clean the floor of the school… It is the heart of all the students here.”
