Doña Guadalupe – 78 years old, widowed since she was young, had raised her only son alone. All his life he saved peso by peso, and with effort he managed to buy a piece of land of more than 120 m² on a federal highway, which today is worth more than 6 million pesos.

His son, Rodrigo – director of a construction company, with a mansion and luxury vans, only took his mother to live with him when she suffered a fall and was hospitalized. After living at home for just seven days, he began to complain:

“Mom is already very fragile and I have a thousand commitments. I can’t be aware all the time. The best thing to do is to take you to a nursing home where they have nurses and professional care.”

Doña Guadalupe was silent, only nodding her head.

The day she was dropped off at the nursing home, no one imagined it would be the last time. Five days later, they called to report that he had died suddenly of a stroke. The funeral was quick and without much ceremony.

Three days later, Rodrigo went to the Notary to process the transfer of the assets that were in his mother’s name. When she opened the file, she froze, almost losing consciousness: the secret she had hidden for 35 years finally came to light.

In the file, on the will, there were some handwritten words by Doña Guadalupe, dated three years ago:

“All my possessions, including the 120 m² land on the federal highway, I leave to my blood grandson, Diego Ramírez.”

Rodrigo was stunned, his hand trembling. Diego was his own son, barely 16 years old, who since he was a child had lived with his mother and his maternal grandmother – that is, with his ex-wife. Since the divorce, Rodrigo hardly took care of him, he did not even give him a pension, leaving him adrift. But his mother, Doña Guadalupe, had seen everything, had known everything.

Below the will there was also a handwritten letter:

“Son Rodrigo: all my life I lived with austerity and sacrifice, just for you to get ahead. But every day you were colder, seeing me as a burden. This land is not for you to sell and squander, but to secure the future of Diego, your only son and my only blood. Remember: true gratitude to a mother is not shown after death.”

Rodrigo was devastated, as if a hammer blow had hit his head. For the first time in his life, he felt an unbearable emptiness, he collapsed right there at the notary’s office. He had been successful, money, luxuries… But he lost the most valuable thing: his mother’s love and her trust.

Faced with the will, he understood with bitterness that his own indifference had led his mother to place all her faith in that son whom he himself had abandoned.
