🎵 The Piper and the Devil: A Sinister Gift That Made a Legend
An eerie English myth of music, mischief, and a pact made on haunted ground
Long ago, in the mist-veiled hills of England, there lived a young man named Mac Ruismean, a simple farmer with no fame nor fortune to his name—yet. That all changed one fateful March afternoon, when his life crossed paths with something not entirely human… and something far from kind.
Mac Ruismean was plowing the field near a shadowed mountain—a place whispered to be haunted by ghosts and strange beings. His loyal servant led the horse ahead. The cold of winter still clung to the land, but the sun lingered longer in the sky.
Grumbling with hunger, the servant muttered half-jokingly:
“Sir, I’d give anything for a man to step out of those mountains with a sweet loaf of bread… some butter and cheese would be grand too.”
No sooner had the words left his mouth than the impossible happened.
Out from the mountain walked a small man—clad in shimmering green clothes, his eyes gleaming with mischief. In his hand: a warm, fragrant loaf of sweet bread, just as the servant had described.
“Here’s the bread I’ve been wanting to give you,” the man said, smiling.
Startled and suspicious, the servant didn’t dare reach for it. But the little man threw it straight at his cheek. The bread stuck to his face like glue—he clawed, scraped, pulled, but it would not come off.
Then the green-clad figure turned to Mac Ruismean and said in a voice that sent a chill down his spine:
“Come with me, good and honest lad. Let me show you what we do inside the mountain…”
Into the Devil’s Domain
Against all reason, Mac Ruismean followed the stranger. The mountain opened before them, revealing a blackened cave like a mouth to another world.
But Mac Ruismean was not without caution. He quietly unsheathed his knife—a habit of his—and wedged it into the stone door of the cave as they passed through. Inside, the young man was met with a bizarre sight: tiny, tireless workers, buzzing about like bees, crafting tools and instruments under torchlight.
The stranger gestured grandly and asked:
“Now, tell me—what skill do you wish to master? What do you desire most?”
Mac Ruismean’s eyes fell upon a flute—elegant, carved from what seemed to be bone, and shimmering with a strange aura. Without hesitation, he said:
“I want to play the flute. I want to be the greatest there ever was.”
The strange man handed him the flute and said:
“As long as this instrument remains with you and your bloodline, you and your descendants will be the most renowned flute players in all of England.”
The Price of Music
With gratitude—and unease—Mac Ruismean accepted the gift. But before he left, he demanded:
“Remove the curse from my servant. That bread on his face—release him from it!”
The stranger grinned, then peeled the enchanted loaf from the servant’s cheek as though it were never cursed at all. Only then did Mac Ruismean pull his knife from the stone door.
The moment he did, the cave slammed shut, disappearing as if it had never been there.
The Legend Begins
Back in the fields, Mac Ruismean raised the flute to his lips. The melody that spilled forth was unearthly—a sound so beautiful, it carried across valleys, through towns, into the hearts of every man, woman, and child who heard it.
His fame grew faster than fire in dry grass. Crowds gathered wherever he went. Even the king summoned him to the royal court, eager to hear the mysterious music that stirred the soul.
Mac Ruismean played until his final days. And when he passed, the enchanted flute passed down to his children. And his children’s children. All of them—without exception—became master pipers, known across the land.
But Who Was the Green-Clad Man?
Some say the stranger was a faerie lord, others whisper he was a devil in disguise, making pacts with mortals who longed for fame. After all, the cave never opened again. And the sweet bread that cursed the servant? It vanished into legend.
Whatever the truth, the tale of Mac Ruismean—the piper who played the devil’s tune—still lingers in British folklore. Some say you can still hear faint flute music echoing near the old mountains…
Especially on long winter days in March.
