After the wedding, my husband and I enjoyed a peaceful, cozy life in our apartment. Everything was going well… until a strange nighttime call.

At 2:00 AM, the phone rang. My husband woke up before me, answered, and turned pale.

— Mom… is everything okay? — he murmured.

She only asked:

— Son, are you asleep? Is everything alright?

It was strange, but we decided maybe his mother was feeling unwell or couldn’t sleep. I even felt a bit sorry for her.

But the next night the call repeated. And again—exactly at 2:00. She called, spoke almost in a whisper, and asked the same question every time:

— Son, are you asleep? I just wanted to know if you’re okay.

We started getting angry. We were exhausted, not sleeping enough, my husband couldn’t focus at work. I became more and more irritated.

On the third night, I suggested turning off the phones. But at 2:30 AM… there was a knock at the door. The mother-in-law was there. She stood in her nightgown, barefoot. Not a trace of embarrassment on her face.

— I couldn’t reach you… and I was scared, — she said calmly as she entered the apartment.

I was furious. But my husband still tried to be patient. He loved his mother, although he admitted it wasn’t normal.

This went on for over a week. We dreaded the night. We begged her to stop… in vain.

But that night she didn’t come. We were surprised and even relieved. I woke up very happy and rested.

During the day, my husband and I decided to visit her. Just to check—maybe she was upset or sick.

When we opened the door to her apartment, a strange smell hit us… She was dead in the armchair. The phone in her hand. It was off.
