The millionaire pretended to be asleep to test his shy maid, but when he opened his eyes and saw what she was doing, his heart stopped… and his life changed forever that silent night.
In a mansion high in the hills above Madrid lived Alejandro Duval , a young, charismatic businessman so rich he rarely heard the word “no.”
He owned companies, cars, gold watches… but he didn’t have one thing money couldn’t buy: peace .
After a public breakup with his fiancée, Alejandro became distrustful and cold. He didn’t believe in anyone’s goodness; he thought everyone was after his fortune.
It was then that he hired a new housekeeper: Lucía Herrera , a shy, polite twenty-two-year-old girl with honey-colored eyes and a way of speaking that seemed to caress the soul.
Lucía had come to the city from a small town in the north. She had lost her parents and desperately needed the job. Everything in the mansion was new to her: the high ceilings, the thick carpets, the priceless paintings. But she didn’t touch anything more than necessary. She just cleaned, tidied up, and always greeted everyone with a discreet smile.
At first, Alejandro barely noticed her. But one night, while he was having dinner alone in front of the fireplace, he heard her voice singing softly from the hallway. It was an old song, one of those grandmothers hummed to put their grandchildren to sleep.
Her trembling voice felt strangely comforting. That night he slept better than he had in months.
Days later, a friend of Alejandro’s laughingly commented,
“You should be careful with your new employee. Sometimes sweet faces hide intentions.”
Alejandro, with his wounded pride and chronic distrust, decided to test her .
One night, he pretended to be asleep on the living room sofa. He had left his most expensive watch on the table, next to an open wallet and an envelope of money.
Lucía was supposed to come in and clean later, as she did every night.
It was almost eleven when the door opened softly. Lucía entered barefoot, her hair tied back, carrying a small lantern. She moved slowly, respectfully, as if afraid of awakening the ghosts in the house.
Alejandro squinted, controlling his breathing to appear asleep. He expected to see something… some sign of interest in the money, a covetous glance.
But what he saw took his breath away.
Lucia didn’t approach the money.
Instead, she bent over him and, with an expression of sad tenderness , covered his shoulders with a blanket.
Then she sighed so softly it was barely a whisper:
“I wish I weren’t so lonely…”
He stared at it for a few seconds. Then he took the gold watch, not to steal it, but to polish it with his handkerchief , as if it were someone else’s treasure he had to take care of.
Afterward, he put it back in exactly the same place.
Before leaving the room, she stopped again and left something small on the table: a dried flower , a daisy, wrapped in a folded sheet of paper.
Alejandro, unable to resist his curiosity, waited until she was gone and took the note.
On it, in shaky handwriting, it read:
“Sometimes those who have everything need something as simple as being seen with kindness.”
That night, Alejandro couldn’t sleep.
The phrase haunted him like an echo, wounding and healing him at the same time.
The next day, he watched her from his studio as she cleaned the windows. There was something in the way she moved, in her silence, that had nothing to do with ambition.
It was humility. It was pure, almost painful honesty.
Days passed, and the test became an obsession. He pretended to sleep again, and again Lucía repeated the same ritual: she covered him carefully, turned off the lamp, and whispered something kind before leaving.
One night, unable to resist any longer, he opened his eyes just as she was about to leave.
“Why are you doing that?” he asked hoarsely.
Lucía started and dropped the lantern.
“Mr. Duval! I… I thought I was sleeping…
” “I was faking it,” he admitted, embarrassed. “I wanted to see who you really were. ”
Her eyes filled with shame.
“Did she test me?” she asked softly.
He nodded.
“I thought everyone wanted something from me. But you… you only leave flowers and kindness. Why?”
Lucía lowered her gaze.
“Because someone once told me that when a person locks themselves away in their wealth, they end up living surrounded by things, but empty of people. And you… you look very lonely.”
Alejandro didn’t know what to say. In years, no one had spoken to him so sincerely.
That night, for the first time, they sat down to talk. Lucía told him about her town, her grandmother, the smell of freshly baked bread.
He told her about his father, his expectations, his fear that they wanted him only for his money.
They talked until dawn.
As the weeks passed, something changed in the mansion. The lights, once cold and white, seemed warmer. The silence no longer weighed heavily.
Alejandro began to smile. He invited Lucía over for breakfast, read her the emails that were bothering him, and asked her simple questions like, “Do you like this song?”
And though neither of them said it, they both knew something was growing between them.
It wasn’t immediate romantic love. It was respect , an invisible connection born of the purest honesty.
One afternoon, Alejandro discovered that the backyard was full of small, dried daisies. Lucía picked them and left them to dry in the sun.
“Why daisies?” he asked.
She smiled.
“Because even the simplest flowers can make someone who already has everything smile.”
However, not everyone shared this newfound peace.
One of Alejandro’s associates, envious, began spreading rumors: that Lucía was manipulating him, that she wanted him to take part of his inheritance.
Alejandro, still weak in his confidence, hesitated for a moment.
And that moment was enough to destroy something.
One morning, Lucía didn’t return.
She only left a letter on the table where she usually placed the flowers.
“Don’t worry about me, Mr. Duval. I appreciate every word we shared. But I’d rather leave before I become another shadow in your story. Take care of yourself.” —L.
Alejandro searched for her for weeks, without success.
Until one day, months later, in a small northern town, he saw a new bakery with a sign that read: “Lucia’s Margaritas . ”
He walked in.
She was behind the counter, flour in her hands and the same shy smile.
When he saw it, he dropped the rolling pin.
“I thought I’d never see her again,” he said, without a mask, without pride.
“Me too,” she replied.
He approached, took a dried daisy out of his pocket, identical to the ones she left for him every night, and placed it on the counter.
“You never stole anything from me, Lucía… but you took away my fear of feeling.”
She smiled, tears still in her eyes.
And this time, Alejandro didn’t pretend to be asleep.
He just lay there, awake, staring at the only person who had managed to truly wake him.
