For three consecutive days, in a small house at the end of street 178 on Le Van Luong Street, Phuoc Kien Communion, Nha Be District, a black dog was found lying next to the coffin of a young woman named Nguyen Thi Hanh , 26 years old. It did not eat or drink, nor did it allow anyone to come near. Every time someone touches the lid of the coffin, it growls, shows teeth, and its eyes turn red from many sleepless nights.

Hanh was found dead in his rented room in the early hours of Monday morning. Initially, police determined it was sudden death from heart failure, as he had a history of chronic fatigue and overwork. His family quickly brought his remains back to their hometown for burial. It all seemed to end in the silent sadness of a young death.

But the dog — named Vàng, which has been owned by Hạnh for more than four years — has caused a stir in the neighborhood. Throughout the funeral, it did not leave the coffin for a moment. Just as the family was about to carry the coffin to the car for cremation at the deceased’s wishes, Vàng suddenly rushed over and bit the person carrying it, almost causing the coffin to fall to the ground.

“I’ve never seen a dog like that,” whispered Mrs. Tư, our neighbor. “It looks like it’s watching… There is no mourning.”

On the third day it rained heavily. The gold was still there, the body soaked, the head leaning against the corner of the coffin. Its eyes don’t leave the wooden cover, occasionally emitting strange, squeaky hissing sounds.

It was this strange behavior that aroused suspicion in Mr. Tran Minh Quan , a neighborhood official. She recalled that before her death, Hanh complained to the neighborhood committee that she was being “followed,” but because there was no evidence, the case was dismissed.

Quân decided to report the matter to the commune police. Due to the pressure of public opinion and due to unusual circumstances, forensic experts from the Nhà Bè district were invited to re-examine the body, even though 72 hours had passed since the temporary burial.

When the lid of the coffin was opened, Vàng let out a long, terrifying roar.

And just a few minutes later, the forensic doctor turned pale.

He spoke softly, but loudly enough for all to hear:
“This is not a case of sudden death.”

The forensic examination itself was conducted in the small house, in the presence of police, family, and neighborhood representatives. Nguyen Thi Hanh’s body had begun to show slight signs of decay, but it was enough to show some abnormalities.

Forensic doctor Le Hoang Duc pointed to Hanh’s neck and ribs. In the calm voice of a seasoned professional, he explained in detail:
“There are bruises and blood clots here, not from the fall. The force was applied horizontally, presumably because of the pressure.”

Subsequently, when he examined his lungs, he discovered signs of mechanical asphyxiation , which contradicted an earlier diagnosis of heart failure. Notably, small pieces of skin and fibers of cloth were found under Hanh’s nails, suggesting that he fought before he died.

Hanh’s family was deeply saddened. Her mother, Nguyen Thi Lan, was in tears . She recalled that two weeks before she died, Hanh called home and said she wanted to move into her rented room immediately because it was “not safe there.”

Police immediately shut down the rented room where Hanh lived in District 7. By analyzing camera footage in the hallway, they discovered that on the night Hanh died, a man wearing a baseball cap and gray jacket went in and out of his room for more than 30 minutes.

That person was Pham Quoc Huy, 32 years old, Hanh’s direct manager at the logistics company where he worked. Huy was repeatedly accused of harassing female employees, but no one dared to file a formal complaint.

When summoned, Huy appeared calm, saying he had only visited Hanh’s bedroom that night to “talk about work.” Still, his statement quickly contradicted his earlier testimony when police discovered scratches on his right arm , matching a piece of skin found under the victim’s fingernail.

What horrified the crowd was the forensic doctor’s account:
“Hanh didn’t die instantly. After being crushed, he remained conscious for at least a few minutes.”

And in those last moments, Vàng – Hạnh’s dog – witnessed it all.

According to the investigation, Huy had visited the rented room multiple times, and Vàng had always been aggressive towards her. On the night of the murder, after Huy left, Vàng was locked up on the balcony. He slammed the door shut and moaned incessantly until morning.

Three days later, when the body was placed in the coffin, the dog was still doing the one thing it knew how to do: watching its owner, waiting to discover the truth.

Pham Quoc Huy was charged with murder, with a maximum penalty of life in prison. At the investigating agency, after many hours of questioning, he bowed and confessed to all his actions.

Huy admitted that during their work, he developed an intention to sexually abuse Hạnh. When she refused and threatened to sue him, Huy went to her rented room with the intention of “fixing this matter.” The argument quickly spiraled out of control. Terrified, he used a pillow to cover Hạnh’s mouth, which he unknowingly led to his death.

After committing the crime, Huy deliberately arranged the scene to look like a sudden death, taking advantage of the fact that Hanh lived alone and worked under stress. He believed that everything would be fine.

But he didn’t consider  the dog  .

According to investigator Tran Minh Quan, Vang became a “special witness.” From his unusually aggressive behavior, biting the pallbearers, to refusing to leave the body, it was all a protective instinct.

“When they opened the coffin, the dog was howling. It wasn’t a premonition, but a reflex of an animal that had witnessed violence,” Quân said.

The trial took place three months later. Pham Quoc Huy was sentenced to   life imprisonment  . Hanh’s family was finally able to cremate his last wishes.

Vàng was taken care of by the family. Since the loss of its owner, it has become very quiet, barking less, and often lies in the corner of the yard looking out the gate. But whenever a stranger approaches, it still stands up, its eyes wary – as if it has not forgotten that terrifying night.

The story of the dog guarding the coffin spread throughout the Nha Be district, not as a sensational anecdote, but as a reminder:
the truth may be hidden, but it is not always buried.
