My parents had five children: four boys and one girl. Back then, we were just poor, and my parents worked tirelessly to raise us all, for our education, marriage, and even for helping us buy land to start a business…
My father is 83 years old and my mother is 81. They both had gray hair and blurred vision, but for many years they had to live in constant fear of being evicted from their home by their own children.
It sounds like a joke, but it’s true.
they thought they were about to have a secure old age , but who would have thought…
Over the past few years, my parents have become extremely vulnerable, the hospital feels like a makeshift lodging, and they have to take too much medication. However, their children rarely visit them, only occasionally visit for a few hours before leaving again, and they always make excuses about being busy with other things when it comes to paying hospital bills.
And then suddenly one day…
Five children gathered for a family meeting demanding the division of the house, and saying things like:
“There’s no point in hiding too much when you’re old!”
“It’s for the parents and the grandchildren as well.”
“It’s greed not to transfer ownership!”
It was as if my parents were renting out their house.
When their request was not approved, they sued their parents for a full year, asking that the land be transferred in their name.
My wife and I – the youngest child – stood there, bitter with nothing to say.
That day, my father had to use a cane, and my mother in turn held me by the shoulder as they walked trembling into the courtroom. The sight of the two frail adults facing their children, their faces sad as if begging for compensation, brought tears to all who witnessed it.
One of the older brothers stood up and said in a cold voice:
“Our parents are old, they have to leave their homes and land to their children to take care of. Why would they even force it?”
My mother listened with tears in her eyes, but remained silent.
I thought those two old men would soften their hearts, beg the court to have mercy on them, and let them live…
But then the panel of judges asked:
“Do you both have an opinion?”
Suddenly my father straightened his back , looking at each of his children, his eyes no longer trembling but… Cold and Sick:
“In my 80 years as a father… I’ve never felt so embarrassed as I do now.”
The whole room fell silent .
He continued, every word as if it were hitting the wall:
“This house belongs to me and to your mother. You sell it, put all the money into medicine and hospital bills. Do not transfer ownership. Don’t split it up. Don’t let them both hurt their parents and benefit from it.”
The older brothers were terrified:
“You can’t do that, Dad! After all, he is my son!”
Dad looked straight ahead:
“My son? If you let your elderly and sick parents face to face… You don’t deserve to be called a child!”
That sentence… Everyone was stunned.
Then my father took it out of his suitcase:
A will authenticated by an attorney three months ago.
It clearly states:
The house and land were not divided among any of the children.
When an elderly couple passes away or is no longer able to live together:
Sell the house to pay for hospital and funeral expenses.
The Rest… was given to a nursing home in the district.
Just one line for the kids:
“If kids don’t have a heart, my money won’t be used to support ungrateful people.”
The five children stood up quickly, their faces pale:
“My father didn’t do anything!”
My mother – who had always been the nicest person in the family – suddenly looked up and said, her voice hoarse but still firm:
“We’ve worked hard all our lives, giving everything to our kids. What Can We Be Blessed With? At this age, we still feel like thieves being dragged to court. If we move everything to you, one day my husband and I will lose our homes.”
Then he put his hand on the table and spoke which stopped any of the five brothers from astonishing :
“It’s better to give to strangers than to hide your possessions to feed… The children are uneducated.”
The court reviewed the file and asked a concluding question:
“Would you like to change your will?”
My parents shook their heads slowly.
The judge declared:
The request of the five children was denied.
The will is legally valid.
The right to make decisions rests with grandparents until the end of their lives.
That day, the five children left the court without daring to look back.
People think that aging brings weakness, but…
★ Sec. 5. There are parents…
I’ve put up with it my whole life…
A lifetime of sacrifice…
Throughout their lives, they have endured pain and loss.
But when the time comes, we need to stand up to defend ourselves, because:
If you can’t even take care of your home when you’re old… There is nothing left to respect for your children.
Even today, it still hurts to think about that story… It serves as a wake-up call.
