I asked for 20 thousand pesos to pay for my husband’s hospitalization, but my son pretended not to understand. It turns out that he and his wife hosted a birthday party at a five-star hotel for their mother-in-law… because years ago, her mother gave them a house for 7 million pesos.
The house of seven million pesos and the night that changed everything
The state’s General Hospital was overcrowded, as always. In the emergency room, Don Ramirez – my husband – lay motionless, breathing heavily. The doctor told me that they needed to operate on him immediately and that I should leave an advance of at least twenty thousand pesos.
I, Doña Rosa, his wife of more than thirty years, let myself fall into the cold bench. My rough hands were shaking. There were no more savings left; everything had gone into medicines. Desperate, I dialed the number of our oldest son, Julian, hoping he could help us.
“Son, your father is very serious. I need twenty thousand pesos for the hospital, can you help me? I begged him.

There was a brief silence, and then I heard his hesitant voice:
“Mom… today I can’t. Tonight we celebrate Mariana’s mother’s birthday. Everything is already paid at the hotel. Can we see that tomorrow?
I felt the ground open up under my feet.
“Tomorrow will be too late, Julian!” Your father can’t wait!
He replied in a whisper:
“But, Mom, she gave us that house of seven million pesos when we got married. I can’t look bad with his family…
The phone slipped from my hands. My mind was filled with a single thought: Is seven million worth more than your own father’s life?
I ran all afternoon asking relatives and acquaintances for help. Everyone had excuses, no one could lend a peso. Meanwhile, in a luxury salon in Guadalajara, Julián and his wife raised glasses, surrounded by lights and music, celebrating the mother-in-law with a lavish party.
That night, I was still next to Don Ramírez’s stretcher, with only a few thousand that I had managed to gather. My heart ached. I thought about selling the small piece of land that we inherited from my parents in Michoacán, but it was the place where my grandparents rest; I had no courage.
Finally, I took the title deed to the family home in Zapopan, the only estate in the name of both of us. I had thought of leaving it to Julián as an inheritance, but at that moment I asked myself: does he still deserve it?
I spent the night awake, and at dawn I decided: I would write a new will to leave the house to my granddaughter, Julián’s youngest daughter, and not to him. At least she would have a refuge in the future.
When Julián and Mariana arrived in the morning, I received them coldly.
“How is Dad?” He asked, uncomfortable.
“Breathing, hopefully,” I replied dryly.
Mariana smiled nervously:
“Excuse me, mother-in-law, but the party was very important. I hope you understand us…
I didn’t hold back anymore.
“More important than your own father’s life, Julian?” Last night I asked you for twenty thousand pesos and you couldn’t. But at the party they squandered a hundred thousand without batting an eyelid.
Julián lowered his head. I pressed the scriptures tightly and said firmly:
“That house will no longer be yours. I will leave it to my granddaughter. I do not intend to give away the effort of his grandparents to those who turned their backs on us.
The silence weighed like lead. Mariana was frozen and Julián trembled, his eyes full of tears.
Thanks to the help of some kind-hearted neighbors, we managed to gather what we needed and the surgery was performed. Don Ramírez survived, although his health was very fragile. When I told him my decision, he was silent for a long time before saying,
“You did the right thing. But, at the end of the day, he is still our son. Don’t push it away entirely, Rosa.
I cried:
“How can we continue to expect something from someone who betrayed us like this?
He didn’t answer, but his eyes reflected a deep sadness.
Gossip soon spread throughout the neighborhood: “The ungrateful son who left his father dying while partying in a hotel.” Julián and Mariana were ridiculed. One night, Julian came to the hospital alone, knelt by his father’s bedside, and burst into tears:
“Excuse me, Dad. I allowed myself to be blinded by money and for fear of losing what was not mine. I was weak.
Don Ramirez took her hand and said in a weak but clear voice:
“It’s better to realize it late than never. But remember: family is worth more than any wealth.
A month later, we officially signed the will that left the house to our granddaughter. I turned to Julian and spoke harshly, but also lovingly:
“I don’t hate you, son. But I want you to understand: inheritance means nothing if there is no respect. Live well, take care of your wife and daughter. If you really change, I’ll rest in peace when it’s my turn.
Julián cried inconsolably, and Mariana hugged the girl, also with tears.
The story spread throughout the colony. Some criticized us, others applauded us, but they all agreed on one thing: no wealth can replace love and gratitude towards parents.
Don Ramírez recovers slowly, and although my heart is still marked by the wound, I accepted Julián back into the house. Because, as they say here in Mexico: blood calls, and no matter how much pain, the family always weighs heavily.
And that house of seven million no longer symbolizes dependence or favors, but an eternal lesson: money is spent, but loyalty and true affection are the only things that sustain a family.
