Dancing on Ice: Torvill and Dean give feedback to Saara Aalto

The competition on Dancing on Ice is well and truly hotting up, with the semi-finals of the ice dancing competition having taken place tonight. While the public get to have their own say via the voting system, the ice panel were on hand to share their thoughts on what competitors delivered on the rink tonight. Jayne Torvill, 61, and Christopher Dean, 60, are British ice dancers who have competed at Olympic and world championship level. They now sit on the judging panel alongside Ashley Banjo, 30, and Jason Gardiner, 47.

Tonight, the four spoke openly about who think should make it to the final, but what did Torvill and Dean reveal through their body language?

Body language expert Judi James said: “This was the night the judges shone on the Dancing on Ice semis and my stand-out body language moment of the series was the look on Vanessa’s face when Ashley told her the choreography was weaker in her second dance with Wes.

“Both Wes and Vanessa’s faces had dropped like bricks as he got four nines rather than perfect scores but Vanessa’s face froze like the ice she’d been skating on when she was told it might possibly have been her fault.”

Meanwhile on the show, Torvill and Dean announced they would be skating on the ice rink themselves next week.

And, it seems that as they made the exciting announcement, the two judges “snapped back” into “coy and affectionate body language” – something which they have previously shown when performing as an ice skating duo.

Judi told Express.co.uk: “With Chris and Jayne snapping back into some of the coy and slightly affectionate body language they were always known for as a performing couple as they announced they’d be dancing a routine together next week the judging panel fell into two double acts with Jason and Ashley suddenly full of praise for the skaters at the other end.”

“Jayne showed a huge soft spot for Brian McFadden, the class clown who has actually learned to skate,” she added.

“Giving Brian a nine for his first dance she punched the air and winked with excitement and Brian mirrored the air punch.

“It was James Jordan’s night though and he had all the judges, even Jason Gardiner, rising to their feet in admiration after his second set of tens.

“Chris even ran out from behind his seat towards James with his arms out in a skit on their Dirty Dancing routine.”

“Holly and Phil had been fighting their way through a highly spirited evening up to that point, having to shout over a noisy audience,” Judi said.

“There was even a moment where all the dancers seemed to stay out on the ice while Holly was telling them to get off, causing Holly to perform an assertive thumb jerk gesture to get them to obey her.”

She went on to add: “It was the first time I’d seen Holly performing a self-comfort fiddling gesture with her wedding ring,” she said.

“It can be a sign of a need for emotional back-up, although it might have been excitement at the expectation for some of the thrilling skating that was to come.”

Dancing on Ice continues next Sunday on ITV from 6pm.
