Every night, a girl wakes up screaming and crying, repeating, “No, it hurts!” His father decides to investigate what is behind the nightmares and is horrified to discover…
Every night, a small trembling voice broke the silence in the Smith home. Eight-year-old Emily Smith would sit up in her bed, drenched in sweat, screaming at the top of her lungs, “No! Stop! It hurts!” Her cries echoed through the walls, wrenching her father, Daniel Smith, from a restless sleep. Night after night he would run to her room and find her curled up in the corner of the bed, hugging tightly, tears streaming down her pale cheeks.
At first, Daniel thought it was just a phase: bad nightmares caused by stress, maybe some scary movie he’d seen at a friend’s house. He stroked her hair tenderly and whispered, “It’s just a dream, honey. Dad is here.” Emily clung to him tremblingly, but in the morning she never remembered the details. She only said that she was tired, with heavy eyes and dull spirits.

Daniel, a thirty-five-year-old single father who worked as a mechanic, was trying to handle the situation as best he could. Since his wife had left, it was just him and Emily, and he prided himself on being a strong and reliable father. But these nightmares seemed different: darker, heavier. They were not random. Emily repeated the same phrases, the same terrified expressions: “No, please stop. Don’t touch me. It hurts me.”
The repetition gnawed at his soul. That was not normal. They were not just dreams. The possibility she didn’t want to admit made its way into her mind: Was Emily trying to tell her something?
One night, after another distressing episode, Daniel decided to act. The next morning, he sat Emily down at the kitchen table; His small hands trembled as he stirred the cereal.
“Emily,” he began softly, “those dreams—” When you say someone hurts you, do you remember any of that?
The spoon stopped. She avoided his gaze, her shoulders tense.
“It’s just a dream, daddy,” he whispered quickly, as if rehearsed.
Daniel felt a knot in his stomach. He insisted carefully,
“Honey, you can tell me anything. If someone bothers you—at school, wherever—you won’t have problems.
Emily shook her head, her eyes bulging with fear.
“Nobody, daddy. I swear. He pushed the bowl away and ran to his room.
Daniel’s heart was pounding. Her daughter’s reaction was not normal. Something was buried very deep, something she was too afraid to say. And he was determined to find out.
Daniel hesitated. The thought of Emily reliving the trauma shattered him. But silence would be worse. That night he took her hands and said,
“I know it’s scary, but we need to talk to people who will help you. You won’t be alone. I will be with you always. None of this was your fault.
Emily trembled, then nodded in a whisper,
“It’s okay, Daddy.
The following weeks were heartbreaking. Emily began therapy, where she slowly spoke about Michael’s abuse. The nightmares continued, but became less frequent as she found a safe space. Eventually, the police put together a case and Michael was arrested and charged.
For Daniel, the hardest thing was not the legal process, but seeing his daughter fight against mistrust and fear. Amid the pain, however, glimmers of hope emerged. Emily started smiling again, even laughing. They adopted a rescued dog, whom he named Daisy, and Daniel saw how the animal’s unconditional love calmed some of his anxiety.
Months later, after Michael’s sentencing hearing, Daniel and Emily left the courtroom holding hands. The air felt lighter, though the scars remained.
Daniel looked at his daughter, who squeezed his hand and whispered,
“I’m not afraid anymore, Daddy.
Tears filled his eyes, but this time they were of relief. He knew the road wouldn’t be easy, but they had regained control. Emily had broken the silence, and together they would heal.
