When they won Winter Olympic gold back in 1984, Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean became the toast of their home town of Nottingham.

They even named a couple of streets after the ice dance champs: Torvill Drive is a short swivel turn from Dean Close, which is not far from Bolero Square.

Now the pair are heading home to give a little back to the place that allowed them to follow their dreams.

They’re hoping to change the fortunes of youngsters living on the St Ann’s and Sneinton estates.

These are places notorious for crime, and the area also has the largest secondary school in Britain, Nottingham Academy.

Can Torvill and Dean’s strong work ethic and sprinkling of glamorous stardust make a difference to children with tough upbringings and few opportunities?

Some of the kids are decidedly apathetic about the chance to perform a routine at a pop-up rink in the middle of the estate.

They see ice skating as expensive and just for girls.

Chris, particularly, is affected by how downtrodden these young people already are. “I’ve got kids at home… if this was their life I’d be a bit sad,” he says.

One teenager, Charlie, is torn, because “people don’t like me ’cos I tell ’em how it is.’

Throughout this three-part series, you’ll meet youngsters with lots of ability – just not necessarily on the blades.

Some of them are experts at starting an argument, even in an empty room.

Jayne and Chris have only a few weeks to get the chosen group to put their aggression aside and work together to perform. They’d better get their skates on.
