A Hidden Goodbye: Torvill & Dean’s Final Routine May Have Been More Than a Farewell — Is Dancing On Ice Over?

Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean conclude ice skating career with emotional routine on Dancing On Ice  amid fears the show could be axed

Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean concluded their ice skating career with an emotional routine on Sunday’s Dancing On Ice final.

The show, which is hosted by Holly Willoughby and Stephen Mulhern, saw Coronation Street actor Sam Aston crowed the 2025 champion.

But shortly before the results were announced, Jayne and Christopher took to the ice for one last time as they prepare or retirement.

Holly announced ‘We have a piece of television history for you.’

Co-host Stephen added: ‘Torvill and Dean have been performing on TV for as long as many of us can remember.

‘In 1984, their Olympic gold medal winning performance was watched by a massive 24 million people in the UK alone.’

Holly continued: ‘Since 2006, they have been performing on the Dancing On Ice rink and tonight they are taking to the ice together for their last ever TV performance.’

Speaking in a pre-recorded interview, Chris then began: ‘It’s very emotional. We wanted to include as much of the professionals as we could.

‘Going out there for our last performance, it’s our Olympics again. We just want it to be perfect.

‘We are retiring our skating now and it’s just fitting we are able to do a final performance on Dancing On Ice.’

Jayne said: ‘When we were asked to do Dancing On Ice, it was to choreograph, we had actually retired and we were asked to demonstrated some of the technical moves with music and we thought ‘um, that would be a routine’.

‘There we go, we were back performing again.’

‘We were doing performances every week and we loved it,’ Chris added.

Jayne concluded: ‘As we’ve been skating together for 50 years and this is our final performance on Dancing On Ice, we wanted to do something really special.’

It comes following the news that Dancing On Ice could reportedly be axed after losing over a million viewers in the last two years with staff told the ‘tired’ show is ‘over’.

According to The Sun the series could be rested, before being revamped and relaunched at a later date, similar to when the show was axed in 2014 and brought back four years later.

A source told the publication: ‘Viewing figures are remarkably less than they were but they still had almost three million watch the launch show. There’s no denying, though, that the format has become tired and they’re not getting the big names they once did’.

‘Changes are needed and it’s likely it’ll be rested and given a new lease of life’ but said staff were ‘not holding out much hope’.

Before adding: ‘The show’s future hinges on the meetings that follow last night’s finale. Dancing On Ice is an expensive production and there are questions over whether ITV is getting bang for its buck‘.

MailOnline has contacted representatives for Dancing On Ice for comment.

Last week source told The Mirror: ‘There are very real fears this is the end of the road for Dancing on Ice. It’s had a good run for nearly 20 years and has a very loyal set of viewers who really love it but the sad truth is there’s just not enough of them.

‘We need bums on seats but the ratings have dropped to a point where it’s difficult to justify the cost.

The future of Dancing On Ice was thrown into doubt ahead of this series after the head judges Torvill and Dean revealed they are ready to hang up their skates and they performed one last time on Sunday.

An ITV spokeswoman told the publication: ‘The Dancing on Ice team is fully concentrating on the much anticipated series finale this coming Sunday and therefore no decision has been made.’

Meanwhile ITV insiders said that Holly is ‘busy with other commitments’, which meant she was unable to return to the game show she hosted a two part special last year alongside Stephen.
