Chiefs announce coaching change after Andy Reid told to step down amid retirement decision
Andy Reid is going nowhere, and the Kansas City Chiefs rebuild following the Super Bowl LIX defeat has already begun, with the NFL franchise hiring a 27-year-old as its linebackers coach
The Kansas City Chiefs have hired a new linebackers coach following their Super Bowl LIX defeat to the Philadelphia Eagles, and head coach Andy Reid is facing calls to retire.
The Chiefs missed out on a historic NFL three-peat after losing to the Eagles 40-22 in New Orleans last Sunday. After the game, Reid, a three-time Super Bowl-winning coach, was told to step aside in Kansas City by FOX Sports radio host Rob Parker, who ruthlessly tore into the Chiefs’ performance.
However, Reid has already confirmed he’ll be returning to the Chiefs for the 2025 NFL season, dismissing calls for him to step down, and Kansas City hired Chris Orr, 27, as its new linebackers coach from Jackson State. The Chiefs will look to reclaim the Vince Lombardi Trophy next year, but they may have to do it without Kansas City legend Travis Kelce, who could retire this offseason.
Coaching change
Orr will join the Chiefs this offseason after making a big impression at Jackson State as a linebackers coach. The former Wisconsin college football star went undrafted in 2020 but spent time with the Carolina Panthers before moving to the USFL to play for the New Jersey Generals and the Birmingham Stallions.
Orr will be in charge of coaching a fellow former Wisconsin Badgers linebacker, Leo Chenal. The new Chiefs backstaffer posted a picture alongside Chenal, wearing Chiefs gear, last July.
Reid told to retire
Reid has come under fire after missing out on a three-peat. The 66-year-old is a three-time Super Bowl champion as a head coach, and all came with Kansas City, solidifying his legendary Chiefs status. However, Reid has faced calls to step down after his team allowed 34 unanswered points until the third quarter of Super Bowl LIX.

“Andy Reid should step down as head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs,” Parker said during his radio show on Wednesday. “And you’re going to be like, ‘They just went to the Super Bowl three times.’ ‘Andy Reid blah, blah, blah.’ This is not a one-game reaction because they lost in the Super Bowl, and they got boat-raced — it was 40-6.
“Where were the adjustments? Where was the game plan? I’m not a football coach. Guys who were football coaches and players questioned the game plan—no running game to start at all. And then you get behind, and then you gotta pass. This is what he did in Philadelphia all the time – pass happy. Always throwing the ball; they got tired of that in Philadelphia.”
Reid going nowhere
Despite criticism, Reid won’t be going anywhere. Reid confirmed before the game that he intends to stay put in Kansas City, unless told otherwise by his bosses. “Yes, I’ll be back,” he said. Reid has 273 regular season wins in 26 seasons as a head coach, a stunning record.
