CONCRETE GHOSTS: POMPEII’S LAST MOMENTS FROZEN FOREVER
Pompeii – a vibrant city of the Roman Empire – was once a symbol of prosperity, culture and art. But within hours, it was all buried under volcanic ash from the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. And the amazing thing is: that deadly ash inadvertently became a tool to preserve history – capturing the final moments of thousands of lives in haunting, realistic and emotional plaster statues.
Pompeii – The City Frozen in Time
Pompeii was once a thriving, bustling port city in southern Italy. On a fateful day in 79 AD, Mount Vesuvius, which had been thought to be dormant, suddenly erupted. The air was quickly filled with ash, toxic gases, and hot rocks. The people of Pompeii had no time to escape. They were buried where they were—as they ran, as they prayed, or as they tried to protect their loved ones.
The ruins of Pompeii lay undisturbed under volcanic ash for nearly 1,700 years, until they were discovered in the 18th century. But what left the world speechless were not just the houses, roads or Roman wall paintings that were almost completely preserved, but… the “ghosts” of the dead – so vivid that it was terrifying.
Great archaeological discovery: Plaster statue from nothing
In the 19th century, Italian archaeologist Giuseppe Fiorelli had a stroke of genius. While excavating Pompeii, he noticed that there were voids in the ash, exactly in the shape of a human body. These voids were where the bodies used to lie, but over time, the soft tissues had completely decomposed, leaving only the skeleton and the hollow space.
Fiorelli came up with a way to pour liquid plaster into the cavities. Once it dried, the ash was carefully peeled away, revealing plaster figures—not just human figures, but also expressive expressions, gestures, and even creases in clothing or scratches on skin.
One of the most famous statues depicts a man lying on his side, his arms raised as if to shield his face from the heat and ash. Another depicts a child huddled next to his mother, as if seeking safety in his final moments.
Witness of history and lessons for humanity
The plaster statues of Pompeii are more than archaeological remains. They tell human stories – of fear, helplessness, and courage in death. They make history alive, intimate, and moving.
The plaster casting technique was later improved with 3D printing technology, which allows detailed replicas to be created without damaging the original monuments. Thanks to that, visitors from all over the world can admire these humane historical relics.
Pompeii reminds us that no matter how great humans are, they are still small in front of nature. And what we can do is learn from the past, appreciate the present, and prepare for the future.
A timeless look
Pompeii is not just a lost city, but a final snapshot of the past. Through the ash and plaster, we can “meet” the people who lived, loved, and died there – nearly 2,000 years ago. Each statue is like an unfinished story, a whisper from history: that we once existed.
