The wife, in labor pains, called her husband. He, with one hand hugging his lover and the other holding the phone, coldly replied: “If you’re going to have a girl, I don’t want to raise her, she’ll only take up space in the house… Go live with your parents!”

That night, in Guadalajara, the sky opened with a furious storm. Thunder rumbled over the rooftops as Lucia doubled over in pain in the small apartment she shared with her husband, Tomás. With trembling hands, he dialed his number:
Thomas… please come. It hurts so much… I think I’m going to give birth now.

On the other side, his voice was as cold as the water that fell from the sky:
“Calling again? I already told you, if you are going to give birth to a girl, you better go to your mother. I don’t plan to raise daughters who only come to spend money.

How can you say that? She’s your daughter too!” Lucia sobbed.
“I’m busy. Fix it alone,” he said, before hanging up.

Lucia stared at the screen off, tears mixed with sweat. Clutching her belly, she went out into the street soaked, knocking on the door of the neighbor, Don Ernesto, who immediately took her to the civil hospital.

Meanwhile, Tomás was in a luxury hotel in Puerto Vallarta, in the arms of Valeria, his young secretary. Between laughter and glasses of wine, she said to him:
“Aren’t you afraid that karma will charge you dearly for lying to your wife like that?
He laughed.
“Lucia?” That woman is a burden. Poor, ugly, and without ambition. When you give me a son, I get rid of everything.

He did not know that, at that very moment, his wife was in the operating room between life and death. Her daughter was born weak, but alive. Lucía lost consciousness.

The next morning, Tomás returned to Guadalajara. But when he arrived at his home in Zapopan, he saw something that left him cold: strangers were taking furniture out of the moving truck.
“Hey!” What are you doing? That’s my home! he shouted.
A man in a real estate company’s uniform calmly replied,
“Not anymore, sir. The property was sold yesterday. Here is the copy of the notarized contract. The new owner is Mrs. Carmen Ortega… his mother-in-law.

Thomas turned pale. He took out the phone, called Lucía, but the number no longer existed. At that moment another tone sounded: it was his mother.
“Thomas!” What did you do? Lucía almost died last night in the hospital! He shouted through tears.
“She had a girl, Mom!” And the house? That house is in my name!
“Not anymore,” she replied with suppressed anger. The house was in my name and I sold it. I bought a new apartment for Lucía and my granddaughter. And you… Don’t come close again. I don’t want such a miserable son.

Tomás collapsed in the middle of the street, under the rain that did not stop.

Three months later, everything fell apart. The company where he worked investigated him for embezzlement. Valeria disappeared with all the money in the corporate account. He had used his signature to divert funds and fled to the United States with another man. Tomás lost his job, his reputation, his house… and even his mother had rejected him.

One sunny afternoon, in front of a new building in the center of the city, Lucía appeared. She was wearing a simple white dress and holding her baby in her arms. At his side, Mrs. Carmen was talking with a neighbor. Seeing them together, anyone would have thought that they were real mother and daughter.

The mother-in-law, with tears in her eyes, took Lucia’s hand.
“Daughter… I misjudged you. I thought my son was a good man. I was so wrong…”
Lucia smiled at her tenderly:
“Don’t worry, Mom. Life always puts everyone in their place. And a woman, no matter how weak she may seem, can get back up when everything knocks her down.”

The wind blew softly, drying the remaining tears. In her mother’s arms, the little girl slept peacefully. And across the clear sky of Guadalajara, a rainbow crossed, a promise of a new beginning.
