I was the daughter-in-law of the Trinh family for five years. During those five years, people said I “lived like a maid with a title.”
My husband – Trinh Minh – is the only son, and his mother is a rich, luxurious and strict woman. From the first day I stepped into that villa, she looked at me with contempt:
“My family lacks nothing, except a daughter- in-law with a decent background . But my son has chosen you, so I have no choice.”
I kept silent. Because I truly loved Minh – loved the way he carried me to the doctor when I fainted in the hot sun, loved his gentle smile when he said: “As long as you are by my side, I will protect you for the rest of my life.”
I believed in that love, believed it so much that I accepted all the insults, even when she made me wake up at 4am to cook for the whole family, then coldly criticized me as “a country bumpkin who doesn’t know how to cook Western food”. I still endured, because I thought: “As long as my husband understands me, that’s enough.”
But then, the love gradually eroded. Minh became busier and busier, spoke less at home, and avoided my eyes. His mother still acted as powerful as a queen, and I was just a temporary guest.
On my fifth birthday as a daughter-in-law, she called me into her room and placed a divorce petition and a suitcase of money in front of me.
— “One billion. Sign here and leave this house. I will send someone to take you away, you don’t need to come back.”
I looked at her, my heart cold.
— “What if I don’t sign?”
She sneered:
— “Do you think my child would want to live with someone like you? You have no family background, no career, and are not worthy of being the daughter-in-law of the Trinh family. This one billion is too generous.”
I was silent for a long time, then softly said:
— “Yes. I will go.”
I didn’t take the suitcase of money. I just went into my room, packed a few clothes and a small box with an old wedding photo.
When I walked out, Minh was standing at the stairs. He didn’t say anything, just looked at me. His gaze – once so warm – was now empty. I smiled softly and walked away.
On the way, my hand gently rested on my belly – where there was a small life no one knew about.
Three years later.
I live in a small town, open a small flower shop called “Nang Som” . Life is not rich, but peaceful. The baby in my belly now knows how to call “mom”, “grandma”. My son – An – is all the joy of me and my mother.
The child looks so much like Minh. From his eyes to his smile, he bears the image of the father who has forgotten him. I don’t resent him, I just sometimes feel a pang in my heart when he asks:
“Why don’t I have a dad like my friends?”
I just smiled:
“Your father works far away. When you grow up, he will come back.”
I lied, but you still believed – believed just like I believed in Minh’s love.
One rainy afternoon, I was arranging flowers when a middle-aged man walked in. He was the former butler of the Trinh family. He looked at me, his eyes slightly red:
— “Miss Tram, the mistress has terminal cancer. She wants to see you… and the baby.”
I was silent. My whole body suddenly trembled.
The day I brought my child back to the old villa, everything was still luxurious but colder. Mrs. Trinh lay on the bed, thin, her eyes sunken. Seeing me, she trembled and raised her hand:
— “You… you really came? I… I was wrong…”
I was about to turn away, but An ran to hold her hand, innocently:
“Grandma, I’m An, hello grandma.”
The whole room was silent. My tears fell, and Mrs. Trinh burst into tears, hugging her grandchild, trembling:
— “My grandchild… my own flesh and blood… Oh my God…”
She looked at me and said in a weak breath:
“I have lost everything, but the biggest loss is your heart. Those billion years were nothing. I only hope you will forgive me…”
I choked up, unable to say anything, just put the bouquet of white roses on the table.
“I don’t resent you. I just hope that in the future, no one will use money to measure the value of others.”
She closed her eyes, smiling lightly as if letting go of everything.
Many years later, my flower shop “Nang Som” became famous throughout the area. Once, a reporter asked me:
“If you could go back, would you choose to leave like you did last year?”
I smiled:
“Yes. Because if I hadn’t left, I wouldn’t have An – something more precious than all the billions of dollars in the world.”
Conclusion:
People say, the most expensive thing in life is not money, but what we lose when we put money above humanity.
And I believe, sometimes, leaving quietly is the most profound revenge.
Would you like me to write an extended version (part 2) – about meeting your ex-husband again after many years, when he realizes the truth about his son and his past of being deceived – to create more emotional depth?
