Every week, my mother-in-law would come to my house three or four times, and every time she would clean out the refrigerator and take all the food for her sister-in-law. I was so dissatisfied that I quietly put something in the refrigerator that made her tremble with fear.
I had been married for three years, living with my husband in San Diego, California.
My mother-in-law’s house was only four blocks away — close enough for her to “drop in” at any time, and far enough away that I couldn’t use the excuse of being busy to avoid her.
My mother-in-law, Martha, was a tough woman, frugal to the point of… overkill. She always said,
“Frugality is a good trait, daughter-in-law. When we were poor, we had to consider every bite of food.”
I understood, and I truly respected it. But there were things that went beyond the limit.
Every week, she came to my house three or four times.
Every time I opened the fridge, I took out everything to “check”:
“Is this milk almost expired? Let me bring it home for my youngest daughter.”
“This meat has been left for too long, let me stew it so it won’t go to waste.”
“There are so many eggs, how can you eat them all, I’ll bring them to Emma (my sister-in-law)!”
And so… my fridge was empty.
At first, I thought “well, whatever you take home, I’ll probably share it with my sister-in-law, it’s nothing.”
But as time went on, she became more and more unreasonable.
Every time she came, I had to go to the market all over again.
Many days I came home late from work, and when I opened the fridge, there was nothing left to cook.
One day, I bought a piece of salmon to make a special dish for my husband at the weekend.
The next morning, Martha came over, and I came home in the afternoon — the fish was gone.
I asked my husband, Andrew, and he calmly replied:
“Mom brought it home. Don’t blame me, the fish is so delicious that it’s good for mom to eat.”
I was so angry that I was shaking, but I still tried to stay calm:
“Honey, if Mom keeps taking things like that, how can I handle it?”
He snapped:
“Mom is my mom! What’s wrong with taking some food! Why are you so calculating?”
That sentence was like a knife stabbing into my heart.
Not because of the food, but because my husband treated me like an outsider.
That night, I tossed and turned all night.
But instead of arguing, I chose a different approach.
The next day, I went to the market, bought everything as usual — vegetables, meat, fruit — and added a… bag of artificial blood for medical purposes, which my friend who worked in the medical field helped me get.
That bag of blood was 90% real, dark red, a bit thick, and no one dared to touch it.
I put everything in the refrigerator, then cleverly placed the blood bag in a transparent plastic box, labeled:
“BIOLOGICAL SAMPLE – DO NOT OPEN.”
The next afternoon, Martha came over again.
I pretended to be taking a bath, and heard her “clack” the refrigerator door open, and I smiled.
Less than a minute later —
“OH MY GOD!”
A loud scream rang out, followed by the “bang” of a plastic box falling to the floor.
I ran out, pretending to be panicked:
“Mom! What’s going on?”
She stood there, her face pale, her hands trembling as she pointed at the refrigerator:
“Wh…what is that? Why is there a blood bag in the house?”
I “calmly” opened the box and said:
“Ah, that’s a fake blood sample, our company is researching medical materials. I brought it back for testing, I forgot to tell you. Did you think it was food?”
She swallowed, her voice trembling:
“Mom… I thought it was beef soaked in wine. I was going to bring it home to cook porridge for Emma…”
I smiled:
“That’s lucky, otherwise if Mom really cooked it, our family would have been on the news tomorrow!”
She was silent, her face still not recovered.
From that day on, she never dared to open my refrigerator again.
Of course, a few days later Andrew found out.
He frowned:
“What’s the difference between you doing that and scaring Mom?”
I calmly replied:
“I was just protecting my kitchen. Think about it — what’s the point of living in your own house without even keeping a carton of milk for your child?”
He was silent for a long time.
For the first time, I saw a bit of shame in his eyes.
That night, he whispered:
“I’m sorry. From tomorrow, if Mom comes over, let me talk.”
I nodded. No need to argue — just be tactful so that people understand.
From that day on, my mother-in-law still came over, but only sat and played with me, drank tea, and told old stories.
No one touched the refrigerator anymore.
Once she forced a smile and said:
“I’m so scared of your refrigerator now, I don’t dare touch it. Okay, let me manage it. You’re old, I only like to eat what you cook.”
I smiled:
“Don’t worry, Mom, I always leave a separate portion for you. But this refrigerator, let me keep it — because it’s mine, yours, and this kitchen.”
She looked at me, her eyes softening.
I understood that sometimes a woman’s cleverness does not lie in being patient forever, but in knowing when to stop — smart enough to make others understand the limits without having to raise their voices.
Some time later, at a family gathering, Martha told her relatives:
“My daughter-in-law is very good. She taught me a lesson without arguing. Now when I go to her house, I just sit and drink tea, not daring to touch the refrigerator anymore.”
Everyone laughed, but I just smiled silently.
My heart felt light — as if I had just let go of a heavy rock.
