Married for 5 years without a child, I shuddered when I learned the reason after just one night sleeping with my sister-in-law…
That night, I was on a business trip passing through San Diego, it was late so I stopped by to ask to stay at my husband’s sister’s house – Laura.
My brother-in-law was on a business trip, there were only two women so she said:
“Stay, the house is empty, we haven’t talked for a long time.”
I agreed, thinking it was convenient.
That night, I didn’t expect that after just a few words from her, my entire 5-year marriage would collapse like an old building blown away by the wind.
I – Emily Carter, married to Michael Brown for 5 years.
We loved each other deeply, lived in Los Angeles, in a small house that we both saved up to buy after getting married.
But for 5 years, we had no children.
I went to all the clinics, tried all the methods – from supplements, acupuncture, egg monitoring, to infertility treatment.
The results were still zero.
His family started to get impatient.
My mother-in-law hinted:
“My son is so good, but God didn’t give him to continue the family line…”
The American neighbor – who always respected privacy – also started to ask:
“Don’t you two plan to have children?”
Michael was still gentle, always saying:
“Children are fate, don’t put pressure on yourself.”
At that time, I thought he was really a good man.
But gradually, I realized something was very wrong.
Every time I mentioned going to the doctor together, he avoided it.
He never gave me the results of any of his reproductive health tests.
And when I asked, he just replied:
“Just let things be natural.”
I used to think – maybe he was sad, so he didn’t want to mention it.
But I didn’t expect that “naturalness” to be a terrible secret.
That night, Laura and I lay in bed talking.
She asked me about work, about family, then suddenly fell silent for a long time.
I thought she was asleep, but suddenly, she burst into tears.
In sobs, she said:
“Emily… I don’t know what to say. But I can’t hide it from you anymore. Michael… he doesn’t deserve you.”
I was stunned, my heart pounding.
“What do you mean?”
Laura choked up.. “Before marrying you, Michael had a deep love affair with a woman. She was a few years older than him, and had divorced because of adultery.
My mother strongly objected, saying she was ‘impure’. My father even declared: My son cannot marry that kind of woman.
Under family pressure, Michael was forced to break up and marry you – the one they ‘chose’ for him.”
I froze.
“And then what?”
She looked at me, her eyes filled with pain:
“He never broke up with that woman. A few years ago, I accidentally saw Michael coming out of a strange apartment – with her.
They even had a child together.
She accepted to be the third person, quietly raising the child, while Michael still went back and forth and provided for them and their child.”
I sat there, stunned.
Every sound in the night seemed to be swallowed up.
But what made me shiver the most was her last sentence:
“For the past 5 years, Michael has put birth control pills in your food and drink, just to make sure you never have children.
He wants to maintain the image of a ‘good son, a model husband’ in front of his family – but in fact, his heart still belongs to that woman.”
The next morning, I returned home.
Michael was still smiling as if nothing had happened.
I looked at him, seeing a complete stranger.
I spoke slowly:
“I know everything, Michael. About her. About the baby. And… birth control pills.”
He was stunned, then bowed his head.
“I’m sorry. I know I’m wrong… but I don’t know how else to do it.”
I laughed, my voice choked:
“You don’t know how else to do it but to cheat on your wife for 5 years?”
Without cursing, without screaming, I just pulled out the divorce papers I had prepared and put them on the table.
He signed silently, without saying another word.
I left the house that used to be my home – which turned out to be just the stage of a fake play. I moved to San Francisco, starting over.
I applied for a job at an advertising company, rented a small apartment, and personally replanted the flower pots that I had forgotten.
There are nights when I still miss Michael – but only to remind myself never to forget the value of truth.
A year later, I accidentally heard the news:
The woman was arrested for financial fraud.
Michael had to shoulder her debt, the company went bankrupt.
I was neither happy nor elated.
I only felt sorry for the man who was once loved, but chose to stray into the darkness.
It took me 5 years to understand that:
There are people who are not worthy of our trust.
And there are seemingly happy marriages – just cracked vases, covered with a thin layer of paint.
Now, I live peacefully, no longer tormented by the question “Why can’t I be a mother?”
Because I know, the worst thing is not not being able to have children – but giving birth to the wrong trust in the wrong person.
🌹 Somewhere in America, there is a woman who was betrayed – but chose to stand up, start her life over, with courage and belief that: true love can only exist when there is no longer any shadow of lies.
