In front of the luxurious Luna Grand Hotel, a skinny ten-year-old Andrei sits, begging as he watches the shapeshifting crowd pour inside.
The hotel’s owner, Don Emilio Luna, a well-known businessman, arrived. He nodded his head and approached the boy.
“Baby, why are you here? Shouldn’t you be at home?”
He looked up and said,
“I’m just asking for money, not for food.” I just need to buy a toolbox. Fifty dollars.”
Don Emilio was surprised and asked,
“Toolbox? For what?”
He said:
“I know how to play with toys, toys. I would like to make a small repair stall. But I don’t have enough resources.”
The old man nodded at him.
“Do you know how much it costs for someone like you?”
Andrei nodded.
“Yes. But I’m just going to go into debt. I’ll pay for it.”
Don Emilio began to smile.
“If you have a debt, there has to be an agreement. I’ll give you fifty dollars, but in two days, you’ll pay me a dollar in interest. That means you will get fifty-one dollars back. From now on, I will be my business partner.”
Andrei was almost incredulous.
“Business partner?”
The old man nodded.
“If you’re serious, prove it.”
And he handed over the bill.
—
The next day, Andrei laid out a cardboard box and an old umbrella on the side of the plaza near the hotel. There he placed a small repair stall that he called “Ayos-Balik: Andrei’s Repair.”
He bought the cheapest toolbox, even if it was second-hand.
Early on there were kids making broken toys, an old man with an umbrella that wouldn’t open, and a guy on a bicycle with broken brakes.
When the doorstopper at the hotel staff entrance broke, a janitor called for his help, and he fixed it in exchange for a piece of bread.
The next day, more people arrived. Someone had a trolley wheel built, a cook staff had a screw on a food cart, and a child was crying because his toy had been ripped off. Andy had to do everything he could, even if it was raining, and he couldn’t sleep.
—
On the second night, Andrei entered the hotel lobby with a plastic bag full of five-dollar coins, one-of-a-kind, and two-five-dollar bags.
Don Emilio saw him and joked,
“I guess you haven’t made a dollar yet.”
Andy quietly placed the bag on the table.
“Fifty-one dollars.”
Everything came to a halt.
Don Emilio asked him,
“How did you do this in two days?”
Andy said:
“I made every penny worthwhile. I didn’t go to bed without a little bit of sleep.”
He pulled out of his pocket a note that he had written on the back of the receipt,
“My first report, as a business partner. There are three returning customers.”
Don Emilio burst out laughing, not out of ridicule, but out of excitement.
—
The next day, he had a small repair corner built at the back of the hotel—with a table, tools, and cardboard signage.
He told the staff,
“If something is broken inside, come to Andrei first before you call an outsider.”
A few weeks later, he was spotted by a well-known investor who was a guest of the hotel. Fascinated by the boy’s story and talked to Don Emilio.
“If you’re such a smart guy, why don’t you make him an official?”
So a small pilot business was launched inside the hotel:
Luna x Andrei QuickFix Services.
Instead of buying toys or food, Andrei even visited the orphanage who had rejected him because he didn’t have a birth certificate. Carry the toolbox, uniform, and hotel ID card.
“I’ll be back here… But not as an adoption. I’ll be back to get another kid who wants to learn. I am now a partner.”
—
One night, he and Don Emilio ate together at the hotel’s restaurant.
The old man asked him,
“Why didn’t you just spend the money I gave you? Why are you suffering?”
Andy said,
“We are a business partner. I don’t want you to think I’m a beggar—I want you to think you’re an investor in my dreams.”
The old man nodded, his emotions shattering.
—
As the business grew, guests noticed that the hotel’s service was unique—a young technician who was always willing to help.
At a conference meeting, Don Emilio introduced his new partner:
“This is Andrei. The first time I saw him, I thought he was a problem. I was wrong—it was a solution.”
The boy stood up, his shirt clean, carrying a screwdriver like a ballpen.
“I didn’t ask for mercy. I asked for a chance.”
And from then on, Andrei wasn’t a beggar, but a story of hope that started with fifty dollars and a one-dollar profit… But billions of changes will be replaced.
