The strange smile on my husband’s wedding night made me shiver. It turned out he had been keeping a terrible secret all these years…
The day I agreed to marry Daniel Harris, I didn’t have any of the excitement of a new bride.
I – Emma Collins, 26 years old – had just come out of a broken relationship that lasted 5 years. My heart was so broken that I no longer believed in men.
When my mother arranged my marriage to Daniel – a businessman 11 years older than me, mature, polite, and wealthy – I just thought:
“It’s better to be stable than to continue suffering.
That evening, the luxurious penthouse in Manhattan was decorated splendidly: roses, wine, flickering candlelight reflected through the windows overlooking the city.
I wore a white silk dress, sat on the sofa, feeling empty. Daniel was silent for a long time, saying nothing.
Then suddenly, he looked at me, his eyes sharp as a knife, his lips curled into a smile – a strange and unpredictable smile.
The space suddenly became stuffy.
I turned away, trying to find a topic of conversation. But his eyes were still fixed on me, as if reading every thought in my head.
“Why… are you looking at me like that?” – I asked, my voice trembling.
Daniel did not answer immediately. He poured red wine into two crystal glasses and slowly said:
“Do you know how long I have waited for this day?”
I was stunned.
Waiting?
We had only known each other for a few months – a marriage arranged by the family, no feelings, no past. What did he mean by that?
Daniel moved closer and sat down next to me.
His fingers lightly touched my hair, his voice so soft it was like a whisper in the night…
“You don’t remember, but I do. I once saved a sixteen-year-old girl crying under a maple tree that year… in Boston.
That girl… was you.”
My heart stopped.
Memories flooded back.
That year, after being betrayed by my friends, I took the night bus to Boston, crying alone at the bus station. A strange man stopped, took me to a motel, bought me a bowl of hot soup and said:
“Don’t be afraid. Everything will be fine.”
I used to call that person “my savior”, then forgot about it in the middle of life.
“Are you… that person?” – I exclaimed, choking up.
Daniel nodded slightly.
His smile was still cold, with a hint of obsession.
“I’ve been looking for you for ten years. I know every place you’ve ever lived, studied, worked. And when I heard you broke up, I knew it was my last chance to have you.”
Touched or Scared?
I was both moved and confused.
Part of my heart wanted to believe that this was fate – the man who had saved me had returned to protect me.
But another part – my instinct warned – sent a chill down my spine.
Because in Daniel’s eyes there was not only love… but also a strange obsession.
As if he not only loved me, but owned me.
That wedding night, in the luxurious room in Manhattan, there was no laughter, no passion.
There was only red wine, pale yellow lights, and the deep eyes of a man who was hiding a secret that I could not reach.
A Premonition of the Hidden Truth
I don’t know if it was a premonition or fear, but I believed –
The man in front of me, who said he had “waited for ten years”,
was not only my benefactor from years ago…
But he was also hiding a terrible secret – something that, when I discovered, made the marriage seem “arranged” This will turn into a dark path that I never imagined.
And in Daniel’s faint smile that night, I suddenly shivered –
because for the first time in my life, I realized: being loved too much… can sometimes be a scary thing.
