In a small alley on the outskirts of Lucknow, everyone knew Mr. Babulal — a thin, hunched over 70-year-old man — who worked hard every day to care for his orphaned granddaughter, Anaya, who was just 10 years old. Anaya’s father worked far away in Mumbai, and her mother had died before she could remember his face. His grandfather was his only support.
The whole neighborhood felt tenderness when they saw the mutual dependence between them. Every morning, he would take Anaya’s hand and escort her to the end of the alley to take an auto-rickshaw to school; At noon, he would make an effort to prepare dal and roti and then help her with the task. The grandfather’s love for his granddaughter was evident to everyone.
However, one hot afternoon in early autumn, the neighbor Mrs. Lata went to visit them and was shocked by a scene that made her shudder.
The door of Babulal’s house was ajar. He was about to go inside to call him, when he heard him murmur in a trembling voice:
“Anaya, don’t sleep… wake up, don’t scare your grandfather…”
Through the crack in the door she saw how she hugged her granddaughter tightly, trembling, calling to her again and again, while the girl lay silent, her face pale. Mrs. Lata froze, her heart pounding. Terrible thoughts crossed his mind: an old man alone at home with his granddaughter, and now she was unconscious in his arms—what a strange scene!
Without thinking too much, he dialed 112 with trembling hands to report “danger signs” at the neighbor’s house, and asked for a patrol car and an ambulance from 108 to arrive.
Ten minutes later, the police and ambulance came running. The entire alley was plunged into chaos. The curious crowded, muttering suspiciously,
“Did that old man do anything to the girl?”
“Oh my God, this looks really bad…”
The door opened. Before his eyes, Mr. Babulal held Anaya in his arms; His face was drenched in sweat and his eyes reddened. When he saw the doctors and the police, he cried out in despair:
“Save my child! She’s been unconscious since the morning, I’ve shaken her and she doesn’t wake up.”
Medical staff quickly checked her out. Minutes later, they breathed a sigh of relief:
“The girl has severe hypoglycemia, she must be taken immediately to the hospital.”
The crowd was stunned. Suspicions turned into shame. They all looked at each other, regretting having thought badly of the old man.
Tears flowed from Babulal’s eyes. Trembling, he followed the stretcher:
“I am poor, I have no money to buy him nutritious food… This morning she told me that it was full, I thought it was true, how could I imagine this…?”
At the KGMU University Hospital in Lucknow, after receiving emergency care in time, Anaya gradually regained consciousness. The girl opened her tired eyes, looked at her grandfather and whispered:
“Don’t cry, I’m fine… I’m just tired.”
She hugged him tightly. His throat closed:
“Grandpa was very scared… I thought I had lost you. Grandpa, I’m alone with you…”
The doctor explained: Anaya suffered from congenital type 1 diabetes, he needed a special diet and constant blood glucose control; otherwise, severe hypoglycemia was inevitable. Upon hearing this, Babulal was stunned: he was old, weak, poor, and now he was facing his granddaughter’s illness, which complicated things even more.
At that moment, Mrs. Lata stepped forward and took her hand firmly:
“Forgive me for the confusion… but thank God the ambulance arrived on time. From now on you will not be alone. The whole neighborhood will take care of her.”
He looked at her and saw the seriousness in her eyes. He nodded slightly; His eyes were still moist, but he felt warm in his heart.
After that incident, the neighbors began to pour even more affection into Anaya: some gave rice, others money; the pharmacist gave strips to measure glucose, the social worker explained how to act in the face of hypoglycemia; The school organized special meals and trained teachers to recognize symptoms and react in time.
Over time, the story died down, but every time Mrs. Lata recalled her initial suspicions, she shuddered. He told the neighbors:
“Sometimes it is easy to think badly of others. But Babulal’s love for his granddaughter… That cannot be denied.”
Since then, the image of the hunched grandfather holding his granddaughter’s hand to school became an endearing symbol in that alley. And that call to 112 “due to a confusion” not only saved Anaya’s life, but also further strengthened the ties of the neighborhood.
