The janitor saw the girl entering the hotel room with her new stepfather every night, peeking through the window, she was shocked by the scene before her eyes…
Grace was a longtime janitor at a mid-range hotel in downtown Seattle. The job was not glamorous but stable, enough to support her and her son who was in community college. Every day, she changed the sheets, mopped the hallways, cleaned the rooms, quietly watching people come and go like a station in life.
Lately, Grace had noticed a “special” guest: Sophie, a girl in her twenties, who often went with a well-dressed middle-aged man. Every night around 8 o’clock, they entered room 405. The man was elegant in a suit, shiny leather shoes; the girl was simple—white T-shirt, jeans, carrying a small backpack.
The repetition made Grace wary. She had witnessed many shady things in hotels. From the front desk, she had heard vaguely that the man was Sophie’s “new stepfather.” The thought made her shudder: a stepfather and a stepdaughter renting a room every night?
The sounds coming down the hall—laughter, a deep male voice, another night ordering late-night snacks—only fueled Grace’s curiosity. She knew better than to meddle in the guests’ affairs, but the repeated nights haunted her: was something wrong going on in 405?
Late one night, walking past the fourth floor, Grace heard noises in room 405: loud, then chaotic voices, like an argument. The girl sounded like she was pleading; the man answered sharply; then sobbing. Grace’s heart pounded. The story began to form in her mind: the girl was being forced by her wealthy stepfather.
Curiosity overcame her, and Grace leaned over to the small window next to the hall. Through the half-drawn curtains, she saw the man standing very close to the girl, his hand on her shoulder; she was crying. For Grace, it could only be the sight of a man overpowering a young girl. She backed away in horror, running down the hall, the image haunting her all night.
From then on, Grace looked at them with both pity and anger. She blamed herself for her helplessness.
The opportunity came on Sunday morning. As Grace was cleaning the room at the end of the hall, door 405 opened. Sophie stepped out alone, holding a stack of papers and several thick books. She smiled politely.
Grace ventured to ask…
— You… are here often?
Sophie nodded:
— Yes. You and I are rehearsing a new play. We are going to compete in a national theater festival in Chicago, so we need a quiet place.
Grace paused:
— Teacher?
— Yes, Mr. Miles Carter, my drama coach. He used to be a famous theater director; now he is the instructor. We rehearse here in private, so we won’t be disturbed.
She handed over the script: the cover clearly printed the title of the play “The Estranged Father”.
As if being doused with cold water, Grace woke up. The laughter, the crying, the “intimate” movements turned out to be just a rehearsal. The man was not her real stepfather, but a director/coach; and Sophie was a young actress working hard for her dream.
Grace blushed and laughed awkwardly. It turned out that she was the only audience for a “play” written by her own imagination.
That night, as she passed the 405, hearing the dialogue, Grace smiled—relieved and alert. She told herself: Curiosity without verification will make up stories that are not true. From now on, I will do my part well—and save the drama for the stage.
