The boy insisted that his father should dig up his mother, and when the lid of the coffin opened, everyone was petrified…
“That night, little Emilio dreamed that his mother came out of the grave, with her eyes full of tears as if she wanted to say something. When he woke up, he demanded that his father dig up his mother, although the whole family tried to prevent it. And when the lid of the coffin was opened, they were all speechless with horror…”
The small town in the mountains of Michoacán, always quiet, changed after the death of Emilio’s mother, a victim of a serious illness. The father and son house became cold and silent. The father, Don Julián, already reserved for himself, after the loss of his wife closed in even more on himself. She worked in the fields, returned home and took care of her son, without saying a word about the past.
Emilio was just 12 years old, an age when he still longed for his mother’s embrace. The loss was too painful. During the day she tried to appear normal at school, but at night she couldn’t sleep, remembering her mother’s voice and sweet smile.
One night at the end of the month, he dreamed that she was standing by the grave, her face pale, her eyes misty with tears, and her hand raised as if for help. He pointed to his chest and shook his head in denial. Emilio woke up with a start, his heart racing, drenched in sweat. That dream haunted him for days.
At first he thought it was just the pain of missing her. But the strange thing was that the same dream was repeated several nights in a row. Her mother stood there, her eyes growing more and more anguished, her lips moving without uttering a word, as if caught in a terrifying silence.
One afternoon, Emilio plucked up the courage and said to his father:
“Dad… I want to open Mom’s grave. I’m afraid he’s not at peace.
Don Julián was startled, his face gloomy. Cried:
“Don’t talk nonsense!” The dead must be left to rest.
But the more he forbade it, the more desperate the boy became. Emilio stopped eating, cried inconsolably and repeated:
“If you don’t let me dig up Mom, I’ll leave the house!”
Don Julián, between compassion, anger and fear, thought: “Could it be just that he misses her too much? Or does that dream contain a truth?”
Finally, after many sleepless nights, he made the decision to open his wife’s grave, if only so that his son would stop obsessing. Deep down, he too was beginning to feel an inexplicable fear, as if beneath that earth there was a hidden truth waiting to come to light.
The next morning, the whole town was agitated when they learned that Don Julián had asked permission to exhume his wife. Some murmured with compassion, others with reproach:
“Surely the boy dreamed something strange…” whispered a neighbor.
“Don Julián is disrespecting the dead…” said another.
Don Julián ignored the comments. He only prepared offerings, lit incense and prayed in front of the tomb. Emilio, his eyes red from crying so much, clung to his father’s shirt.
The workers began to dig, blow after blow of the shovels echoing in the tense air. The neighbors gathered around, expectant.
When the last layer of earth was removed, the wooden coffin appeared. With trembling hands, Don Julián lit another incense and gave the signal to open it.
A pungent smell immediately came out, forcing many to hold their noses. But what paralyzed everyone was not the stench, but the vision before their eyes:
The body of Doña Teresa—Don Julián’s wife—was not decomposed as expected. His face remained intact, his eyes wide open, his lips pressed together as if enduring excruciating pain.
A cry escaped from a neighbor:
“My God!” It’s the same!
Don Julián collapsed, his heart pounding in his chest. Emilio burst into tears:
“I told you!” Mom didn’t rest in peace!
Terror took hold of everyone. Some whispered: had he died unjustly? Had she been buried alive?
An old man with a white beard muttered in a trembling voice:
Many years ago I heard of “apparent death”: the heart stops and it seems that the person dies, but hours later they can revive. What if that happened to Doña Teresa…?
A shiver ran through everyone. Did it mean that she had woken up in the darkness of the coffin, struggling in vain to get out?
The local authority intervened and summoned a forensic doctor. The results were devastating: Doña Teresa had not died of heart disease, as was diagnosed at the beginning, but of asphyxiation inside the coffin.
The doctor explained,
“These cases are extremely rare. The patient went into a state of clinical death: the heart stopped, breathing stopped, but she was not really dead. With limited medical resources, she was pronounced deceased… and was buried prematurely.
The whole town was overwhelmed, imagining the agony of the woman locked in the dark, screaming without anyone being able to hear her.
Don Julián cried inconsolably in front of the altar with the photo of his wife:
“Teresa, I am a criminal! If I had waited a little longer, if I hadn’t accepted so quickly… you wouldn’t have suffered like that…
Emilio hugged the portrait of his mother, his eyes lost. He knew that nightmare would be with him forever.
After a second funeral, the family decided to cremate Doña Teresa so that, at last, she could rest in peace. The flames rose as everyone cried. It was the only way to close the tragedy.
The story became a painful lesson for the entire town. Since then, local doctors have been taking more precautions when declaring a death, fearful of repeating the same mistake.
Don Julián lived the rest of his days in silence, but he poured all his love into his son. He always repeated to him:
“Son, you must live with kindness. It’s the only way for your mother to rest easy.
And Emilio, even as a child, understood that there are pains that never disappear, but that teach us to value life and every moment with those we love.
